The number-one ranked Lady Chaps (29-0, 18-0 Heartland) clinched an automatic berth into the South Central Regional by winning the Heartland Conference Tournament with a 75-52 victory over St. Edward's. LCU is expected to be the top seed in the regional and therefore would play host to the eight-team tournament being held March 10-11 and 13th. In last week's regional rankings, LCU owned the top spot amongst teams in the Heartland, Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Athletic conferences. The Lady Chaps hope to keep their streak of 11 consecutive trips to the national tournament alive when the team has been eligible for postseason play.
The fate of the Chaps (20-9, 14-6 Heartland) is a bit murkier as LCU will not receive an automatic berth after an 81-79 loss to Newman in the first round of the conference tournament and hopes to earn one of the five at-large bids. Prior to this week's tournament, the Chaps maintained the sixth spot while Midwestern State and Angelo State were slated one-two in a race for the right to host. LCU's last trip to the national tournament was during the 2004-05 season while a member of the NAIA.
