LUBBOCK, Texas (October 2, 2014) – Lubbock Christian University led 2-1 in the second half with East-ern New Mexico University playing a man down, but the Greyhounds were able to get the tying goal in regulation and hold the Chaparrals to a 2-2 tie in double overtime Thursday afternoon in LCU's final pre-Heartland Conference contest.
LCU was trailing 1-0 to start the second half, but they would not trail in the half long, as a steal led to a goal by
Corey Hutchison 15 seconds into the half to tie the game 1-1. The momentum shifted quickly in favor of LCU, and 6:35 later,
Tommy Fogarty-Cameron scored a goal off
Mitchell Hopkins' corner kick for a 2-1 LCU lead.
ENMU started to lose composure initially after the LCU lead. An aggressive tackle by ENMU's Eanna O'Gorman led to a red card and ejection in the 56th minute and 3:28 after Fogarty-Cameron's goal. The game was very aggressive and the teams combined for 39 fouls, which is a program record for single game combination of two teams. LCU was whistled 21 times for fouls, which is the most since they had 25 against Northwood (Texas) on Sept. 12, 2012. There were nine cautions handed out (five yellow cards against LCU), tying a LCU program record for the most cautions issued in one game for combined teams (matched a game against University of the Southwest on Sept. 24, 2010).
Once the Greyhounds were short a player, they actually played better. Playing with 10 players the final 54:42 of the game, ENMU out-shot LCU 9-5 the final 34:42 of the second half. Included in the span was Abayneh Crosby's equalizer in the 66th minute for his fourth goal of the season.
The goalkeepers came up big once the game was tied 2-2. LCU goalkeeper Tristan Putnam helped force overtime with a pair of key saves in the final five minutes of regulation and ENMU's James Gutierrez stopped all four LCU shots on goal in overtime.
The Chaps out-shot ENMU 20-18 in the game and had a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. Putnam moved to 2-3-1 in the tie, stopping four of six shots faced. Gutierrez stopped seven of nine shots in the tie and went to 3-3-2. Neither keeper registered a save in the opening half, and the only shot on goal in the half was a header by Ryan McManus 1:09 into the game, which resulted in the game's only first half goal. Jose Hernandez received an assist on each goal for ENMU for a two-assist game.
LCU moved to 2-3-1 with the draw and ENMU went to 3-5-2. It was LCU's first tie of the season and their first since Sept. 14, 2013 (against Huston-Tillotson at home). LCU is 6-1-10 all-time in overtime contests and 2-1-5 all-time at home. Technically, the game was LCU's second home game, but it was their first game at LCU Soccer Field this season. Weather moved their home opener to Texas Tech's facility and their prior scheduled home game was cancelled due to rain and unplayable conditions. The game was LCU's final conference tune-up, as they begin conference play Monday at 2 p.m. hosting Texas-Permian Basin.
