DALLAS (November 3, 2014) – Lubbock Christian University fell into a deficit they were unable to rebound from in their final game of the 2014 season, falling 3-2 to Dallas Baptist University in a Heartland Conference thriller at Patriot Field Monday afternoon.
LCU trailed throughout nearly the whole game, as DBU jumped out to a 1-0 lead with Ashley Cox scoring her eighth goal of the season 16 seconds into the contest. Emilie Macdonald provided DBU a 2-0 lead nearly 13 minutes later in the 14th minute with her ninth goal of the season. Her goal was assisted via a cross from Cox. LCU cut the deficit in half in the 24th minute with
Claudia Sanchez netting her 13th goal of the season. She capitalized off a rebound from a header off the crossbar from
Brooke Wendl.
In the second half, Lea Sedwick regained the two-goal cushion for DBU with her third goal of the season. She tallied the marker in the 51st minute with a header that banked off the post. The Patriots didn't let down, seeking an additional insurance goal, but
Lauren Story was magnificent with a pair of remarkable saves and a diving interception of a cross with two undefended Patriots awaiting the cross. Her saves almost turned beneficial, as
Ashley Ledford put a shot upper-middle in the 71st minute to cut DBU's lead to 3-2.
The Lady Chaps tried to garner the equalizer in the final 19 minutes, outshooting DBU 4-1 during the rally attempt. DBU dodged three big LCU opportunities during the stretch as well. Sedwick was carded for a foul for taking down a Lady Chaps player in the box, but the official ruled for a set piece atop the 18-yard box. With 8:49 remaining, Sanchez had a header go off the crossbar, and with 4:28 left,
Brooke Wendl was stopped by goalkeeper Kerry Edwards nearly point blank to preserve the Patriots win.
DBU out-shot LCU 16-14 overall and 8-4 in shots on goal. Story fell to 11-4-0 on the season, stopping five of eight shots faced. Edwards received the win (13-3-1) allowing two goals on four shots faced. The opening surge for DBU (13-3-1, 7-1) was huge, as LCU finishes the season 0-5-0 when their opponent scores first and 0-2-0 when trailing at the half. The loss was LCU's first loss all-time in Dallas County (3-1-0).
The Lady Chaps finish the season with a mark of 11-6-0 overall and 6-2-0 in conference play. They finish in third place in the conference for a second consecutive season. The season was the final season of NCAA postseason ineligibility for LCU and they will be eligible next season if the NCAA approves LCU's transition status during the summer.
LCU had eight different goal scorers this season and all are returning for the 2015 season. Included is leading scorer Wendl (36 points off 14 goals and 8 assists) and Sanchez (31 points off 13 goals and 5 assists), which gave LCU their first tandem of players with at least 10 goals since 2010. All 11 starters return, including Story, who will head into next season 21-13-1 with 14 shutouts.
