PORTALES, N.M. (November 9, 2014) – For a second consecutive season, Lubbock Christian University had their season end with a four-goal deficit to Eastern New Mexico. Sunday,
Elijah Madzikatire would be the lone Chaparral finding the back of the net, as LCU fell 5-1 at ENMU to close their 2014 season.
The four-goal deficit matches their largest loss of the season, a 4-0 loss on Sept. 15 in the Chaps first true road game of the season at Midwestern State. The five goals allowed is a season high and the most allowed since allowing five to John Brown University Oct. 13, 2012.
Abayneh Crosby opened the game's scoring in the 23rd minute with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. They made it 2-0 before halftime with Alexis Medina scoring in the 36th minute. The Chaps were unable to regroup in the second half, as ENMU scored a trio of goals in a span of 16:47 for a 5-0 lead in the 70th minute.
The Chaps dodged the clean sheet with 1:16 remaining, as Madzikatire scored on a set-piece for the Chaps only goal of the game. His goal was his second of the season. The goal was the 17th allowed by ENMU this season preventing them from setting a single-season program record for fewest goals allowed.
The Chaps were out-shot 25-16 in the game, with both teams combining for 26 shots in the first half (16 by ENMU). The Greyhounds had a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. LCU was unable to garner additional offense despite a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks in the second half.
Crosby and Jose Hernandez each led ENMU with a goal and an assist for three-point performances.
Tim Saucedo suffered the loss (7-3-0), allowing five goals on the 10 shots while in goal for LCU. ENMU used two goalkeepers, with James Gutierrez playing 76 minutes and earning the win stopping all three shots he faced to improve to 7-4-3.
The five goals scored is a season high for ENMU, as they had not scored more than three in a game this season. It is the most goals they have scored since scoring six against Southern Nazarene on Oct. 14, 2013. They close their season with a 7-7-3 record.
The Chaps close their season with a 9-6-1 record. Saucedo,
Stewart MacDonell and
David Dykstra played in their final game as members of the Chaps. MacDonell appeared in his 71st game to leave second on LCU's career list for games played. Nine starters from Sunday's contest are expected to return next season, along with their top seven leading scorers. Lubbock Christian University is completing their provisional year this year and hope to receive NCAA approval during the summer to become full members beginning next season, therefore becoming postseason eligible.
