Chaps stymie Royals, improve to .500

LUBBOCK, Texas (December 16, 2014) – While Lubbock Christian's defense keyed a 74-50 victory over Ecclesia on Tuesday night at the Rip Griffin Center, three Chaps posted double-figures in scoring, led by a game-high 16 points from A.J. Luckey, along with a career-high 15 by Matt Alford and 11 from Isaac Cardona.

LCU (3-3) held Ecclesia (4-9) to 29-percent shooting overall, allowing only four field goals throughout the entire first half. The Chaps also forced the Royals into 21 turnovers which turned into 37 LCU points and outscored EC in the paint, 32-8.

Although the Chaps led by as many as 30 in the second half, LCU never really took control until the 6:46 mark of the first stanza. An offensive board by Beau Durham resulted in a three-pointer by Luckey from the baseline for a 30-15 advantage. Luckey then added another trey, and Durham converted a shot in the paint to extend the lead to 20 with under six minutes on the clock.

After doubling up the Royals with a halftime score of 42-21, the Chaps opened the second half with a 12-3 run for their largest lead at 54-24. LCU then hit a drought, going over eight minutes without a field goal, while Ecclesia went on a tear, hitting six-of-seven from the floor, including back-to-back three-pointers by Austin Burroughs to cut the lead to 55-37 with just under 10 minutes to play. Cardona came through with a bucket down low to end LCU's scoring deficiencies as the Chaps continued to increase their lead throughout the remaining minutes.

Two Chap players made their LCU debut against the Royals, with redshirt freshman entering the contest and recording a board, as well as midyear transfer John Lewis, who connected on his first two shots from the floor and finished with four points.

For Ecclesia, Wesley Bradford and Rashad Colbert each registered 11 points.

The Chaps kick off Heartland Conference play Thursday at The Rip, hosting Texas A&M International at 8 p.m. The game will be televised on FOX 34 News Now.
