Chaps lay an egg in Eagles’ Nest for first conference loss

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (January 10, 2015) – An accumulation of season lows for Lubbock Christian played a large part in a 75-55 Chap loss to Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon at the Eagles' Nest to give LCU their first loss in Heartland Conference play.

The Chaps (7-5, 4-1 Heartland) produced their lowest offensive output of the 2014-15 season, tallying just 55 points, 19 field goals at a .333-percent clip, and hitting six of eight free throws. Marcos Schuster registered a team and career-high 16 points, and teammate John Lewis scored a career-best 10.

The game was ugly early on for LCU, with OC's Jordan Box hitting the first three points of his career-high 23 on the opening possession of the contest. Schuster answered with a three-pointer of his own, but the Chaps quickly found themselves down 24-12 midway through the first half.

The Eagles turned up their offense another notch with Elijah Strickland and Box each draining a shot from deep, and big man John Moon added three points to put OC up 33-12 with 5:07 left until the break. Matt Alford converted a three-point play, and Jacob Dawson and Lewis each hit a three-pointer, but the Chaps still found themselves down 40-26 at halftime.

Head Coach Todd Duncan sent out a different lineup to begin the second stanza, and another Dawson trey closed the gap to 42-31 three minutes into the half, but the Chaps were unable cut any deeper into the Eagle lead.

OC did not convert a field goal within the final 5:22 of the game and amassed only 16 points from the field after the break, but the Eagles tallied 19 from the charity stripe.

The Chaps did a decent job of containing the seven-foot Moon, holding him to 15 points and seven boards, both slightly under his season average, but struggled on the perimeter. LCU allowed Box to triple his season average and Elijah Strickland logged double his normal numbers, scoring 23 and 16, respectively.

The Chaps return home next week for a pair of Heartland matchups, first hosting Rogers State on Thursday at 8 p.m. and then Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday at 3 p.m.
