DALLAS, Texas (January 31, 2015) –
Ridrell Holman's three-pointer hit the back iron just before time expired and was unable to salvage a sluggish first half by Lubbock Christian to hand Dallas Baptist a 69-67 win Saturday afternoon at the Burg Center.
This contest was eerily similar to last year's battle in Dallas, where the Chaps had a final three-point attempt from the right wing rim out at the buzzer following a second half comeback after a sloppy first 20 minutes.
The Chaps (11-8, 8-4) trailed the Patriots (11-8, 5-6 Heartland) by 13 with 5:38 remaining in the contest but amped up the defensive effort, not allowing DBU to score a field goal the rest of the way and forcing six turnovers.
A.J. Luckey, who scored a game-high 21 points, converted four free throws and a bucket to help trim the Patriot lead to 66-60 with 2:16 left to play.
John Lewis then forced a turnover that resulted in another Luckey bucket to pull the Chaps to within a pair with under two minutes to go.
A dish from
Marcus Arrington to
Isaac Cardona in the lane cut DBU's lead to 67-64 with 54 seconds left on the clock, and a steal by
Marcos Schuster resulted in two points at the free throw line by
Ridrell Holman to pull LCU to within one with 13 seconds left to play. The Chaps were forced to foul, with Luckey being the martyr and picking up his fifth personal resulting in his disqualification, sending Shannon Lilly to the line. Lilly hit both attempts to extend DBU's lead to 69-66 with 13 seconds remaining before Cardona was fouled while shooting and nearly connecting. Cardona made the second of two shots before LCU sent Chris Strong to the line. Strong missed both free throws, giving LCU the ball with eight seconds to play, but Holman's shot was slightly off the mark.
The game was prone to turnovers, as LCU committed 18, two off of their season high, with the Patriots totaled 23 miscues. The Chaps, who have yet to win a game while be outrebounded, surrendered four more boards to the Patriots (33 to 29), and allowed DBU to sink 11 threes, tying a season high for Chap opponents.
Cardona recorded 13 points,
Matthew Alford contributed 11, and Holman added 10.
For DBU, Myles Johnson and Tim Simmons each scored a team-high 14.
Despite the loss, LCU remains in at the top of the Heartland Conference standings in a five-way tie with St. Edward's, Rogers State, St. Mary's and Arkansas-Fort Smith.
The Chaps return home on Thursday for an 8 p.m. game versus Oklahoma Christian.
