Second-half run carries Chaps to another conference win

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 5, 2015) – Five Chaps scored in double figures to lift Lubbock Christian to an 86-78 victory over Dallas Baptist on Monday night at the Rip Griffin Center to keep their conference record unblemished and sit tied atop the league standings.

A.J. Luckey once again led LCU (6-4, 3-0 Heartland) in the scoring column with 21 points, while Isaac Cardona posted 14, Marcus Arrington and Matthew Alford each contributed a dozen, and Ridrell Holman added 11. Arrington and Alford were each one stat short of their first career double-double with Arrington dishing out nine assists and Alford grabbing nine rebounds.

Although the Chaps connected on just five three-pointers, half of the amount produced by DBU (8-4, 2-2), a trio from deep within a two-minute span extended the Chap lead from six to 15 at the 10-minute mark of the second half. Leading 56-50, Beau Durham began the barrage with a shot from the wing followed by another by Holman and capped off by Marcos Schuster for a 65-50 LCU lead.

A hard take by Arrington drew a bucket and the free throw to keep the Chap advantage at 15 with just under four minutes to play, but the Patriots put together an 8-2 run to close the gap to 81-72 with two minutes remaining. DBU's full court defense then forced Luckey into a turnover, but the Patriots failed to convert on the offensive end, and a Holman basket extended the lead back to double-digits, pushing the Chaps to their third conference win in as many tries.

LCU struggled early on, hitting just one field goal within the first three minutes, allowing DBU to jump ahead 11-2. The Patriots led by as many as 11 midway through the first half before Alford scored on a baseline floater to tie the game at 31-all with 1:21 until the break. With seven seconds on the clock, Cardona corralled a defensive board and found a streaking Luckey who went end-to-end for a layup at the buzzer to cut the Patriot lead to one.

For DBU, Myles Johnson scored a game-high 26, and Amari Bryant had 11.

The Chaps are off on their first conference road trip of the season to face Newman on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 3 p.m.
