LUBBOCK, Texas (February 1, 2015) –
Guillaume Blanchette made his Lubbock Christian University debut on the mound and allowed one run off three hits in seven innings to help lead the Chaparrals to a 3-1 win over Adams State University Sunday afternoon at Hays Field.
A day after combining for 33 runs off 36 hits, the two teams combined for four runs off 11 hits. All 11 combined hits were singles. The teams also combined for five errors. The two stats played hand-in-hand in the bottom of the second inning as singles by
Jose Favela and
Stephen Withrow, combined with an ASU error led to LCU taking a 1-0 lead. ASU tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning with Chris Morley producing a two-out RBI single. LCU answered in the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off error leading to LCU loading the bases. Stramp walked with the bases loaded for an RBI and Jesse Pintado followed with an RBI single for a 3-1 advantage.
Elfego Torres came on to earn the save in the ninth inning, but not without drama. After striking out his first two batters faced, Torres walked three straight batters and ASU had the bases loaded. Torres got out of the jam and claimed his second save of the season by forcing Quinn Tiernan into a fielder's choice groundout to third base.
Blanchette claimed the win going seven innings and allowing one run. The Quebec native walked one batter and struck out four batters. J.D. Heredia suffered the loss for the Grizzlies. He went 4.1 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) off five hits. Pintado and Withrow each went 2-for-4 in the win for LCU.
LCU improved to 2-0 with the win. The Chaps have a 10-game win streak carrying over from last season. They close out the series with ASU (0-2) Monday with a 1 p.m. first pitch scheduled at Hays Field.
