Lady Chaps conclude Desert Stinger with 4-1 mark

LAS VEGAS (February 15, 2015) – Lubbock Christian closed out the sixth annual Desert Stinger Tournament with a pair of wins Sunday afternoon at Majestic Park, defeating Fort Lewis College 7-2 and Black Hills State 13-4 to bring their three-day record to 4-1.

In game one versus the Skyhawks (2-9), the Lady Chaps (8-1) earned their first score on an Ashton Bell RBI single up the right side. Two innings later, Sydney Beuthien continued her torrid hitting by knocking one over the left center field fence in the following frame to add a pair to the scoring column. A Bell triple set up another RBI single, this time from Jessica Loiacano, to extend LCU's lead to 4-0.

Bell's play was also solid in the circle, not allowing a Skyhawk hit until Tehenia Telliano delivered a single to right center in the fourth. Despite the Lady Chaps committing an error and a wild pitch, no Skyhawk was able to score.

Fort Lewis fared better on their next opportunity, receiving a double from Adriana Rosthenhausier and a triple by Myndee Thompson for their first run before Thompson made it around to cut LCU's advantage to 4-2.

Katlin Reed delivered, delivering a deep shot down the left field line to extend the Lady Chap lead to 6-2. A single by Roxy Curiel in the top of the seventh led to her stealing second and advancing to third on the throw before Taylan Halsell brought her around for the 7-2 Lady Chap victory.

Bell (1-1) notched her first win of the season on three hits, four walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Black Hills State (1-4) came out with some early offense, tallying two runs in the top of the first. In the bottom of the frame, LCU was able to cut the deficit in half from a Loiacano RBI single to score Beuthien.

The Lady Chaps knotted the game at 2-2 following a Shlay Denison single up the middle. Pam Pence and Abi White each reached first by way of a fielder's choice, and a single through the right side by Faith Koria led to runs by Pence and White and a 4-2 LCU edge.

The biggest inning of the day took place in the bottom of the third against the Yellow Jackets, beginning with singles by Bell and Loiacano, and Molly Davison made her way to first due to a BHSU error. Haley Hardison brought in Bell and a Denison single again loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Pence brought in Davison for a 6-2 LCU lead when Addison Ard stepped in to pinch hit and did her job well, smoking a home run on her first pitch for another trio of Lady Chap runs.

The Yellow Jackets added another score in the top of the fourth, but LCU was not done adding to the lead, bringing in two more runs in the bottom of the inning on a Poe and Halsell RBI. The Yellow Jackets stayed alive on an RBI single, but two RBI by Hardison brought in Jacie Thomason and Davison to complete the game.

White (1-0) tallied the win on three hits, three walks and a strikeout.

The Lady Chaps continue tournament play next week at the North Texas Softball Bash in Mansfield, Texas, beginning with games on February 19 against Midwestern at 1 p.m. and Cameron at 3 p.m.
