MANSFIELD, Texas (February 21, 2015) –
Katlin Reed recorded a trio of homers on the day as Lubbock Christian defeated Bethany College, 16-12, after falling to Midwestern State, 8-3, to wrap up the Mansfield North Texas Softball Bash with a record of 2-4 at James McKnight Park East.
During the early game, two LCU fielding errors allowed the Mustangs (13-4) on the board early, but the Lady Chaps answered in the bottom of the first with singles by
Molly Davison,
Sammie Murrietta and Reed, which brought in pinch runner
Jenny Rigney to tie the game at 1-1.
Two MSU batters made their way on base by walks, and Haley Howerton brought her teammates around on a home run to centerfield for a 4-1 Mustang advantage. An RBI double by Katy Vandewater added another run to MSU's total for a four-run lead.
Reed blasted a homer to center field as the first batter of the fifth inning to pull the Lady Chaps to within 5-2, but Vandewater homered for a pair of runs and Katlyn Holmes added another on a solo shot for an 8-2 MSU lead.
Reed registered her second home run of the game in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough, as the Lady Chaps were put out on their next three at bats.
Bell (1-3) garnered the loss with seven hits, four strikeouts and four walks.
In game two versus Bethany, the Lady Chaps scored five runs on four hits during the top of the first with the initial run being credited to a sacrifice fly by Murrietta. A BC (4-4) throwing error was responsible for the scores by Reed and Davison, and
Faith Koria and
Sydney Beuthien each totaled an RBI before the end of the inning to put LCU ahead, 5-0.
A Courtney Davis homer to right field for the Swedes gave BC their first score of the day, but a Murrietta double down the left field line in the top of the third put the Lady Chaps up 7-1 before a Beuthien grand slam to left center gave LCU a commanding 10-run lead.
The Swedes did not bow down however, scoring two runs on a Jordan Blakesley single through the right side followed by a Davis RBI single to slice into LCU's lead, 11-4. A fielder's choice resulted in another run, while a bunt and double to left center pulled BC to within 11-8. A wild pitch allowed another Swede runner to dash past home plate, as BC finished the frame with eight runs scored and trailing by two.
LCU increased their lead to four on a Murrietta RBI single up the middle and a Beuthien RBI single through the left side, and then added another pair in the top of the sixth on hits by Beuthien and Bell to increase the lead to 15-9.
Reed notched her third home run of the day in the top of the seventh to give LCU another score. BC's Camille McIver smashed a hit over center field to get the Swedes to within 16-12, but the Lady Chaps were able to hold on to earn their second win of The Bash.
Lauren Hardin (1-0) earned her first win of the season with six hits in the victory.
The Lady Chaps begin Heartland Conference play Thursday by hosting Texas-Permian Basin in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at PlainsCapital Park.
