MIDLAND, Texas (February 21, 2015) –
Josh Powe combined for four hits and produced the game-winning RBI in a 6-5 walk-off win before the Chaparrals fell in the second game 3-2, as Lubbock Christian University split a doubleheader with Eastern New Mexico University Saturday at Security Bank Ballpark.
Powe's lone RBI of the doubleheader came in extra innings of the opener. In the eighth inning of a seven-inning scheduled game, Powe hit an apparent sacrifice fly, which was dropped by the right fielder and
Hunter McFall scored to win the game. It was the only time LCU led in the game as they rallied back three times. They bounced back from a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the second inning with a double from
Ethan Kohnle to tie the game at 1-1, overcame a 4-2 deficit with a run in the sixth inning (
Adam Norblom's first home run of the season) and a run in the seventh inning (McFall followed a triple scoring on a wild pitch) to extend the game into extra innings and rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the bottom of the eighth in-ning. Clyde Kendrick, who would start on the mound in the second game, came in to pinch hit in the eighth inning and delivered with a two-out single to give ENMU a 5-4 lead. In the bottom half of the in-ning,
Wade Stramp led off with a double and scored on
Nikko Velarde's single to set up Powe's heroics.
The Chaps won despite stranding 14 runners. Norblom (led LCU with two RBI), McFall and Powe each went 2-for-4 at the plate for LCU. Daniel Ward had a pair of hits (2-for-3) for ENMU.
Glen Warrick received the win in relief and is now 3-0 on the sea-son.
Guillaume Blanchette started on the hill for LCU and allowed four runs off five hits and was not part of the decision. Nick Sarmiento (0-1) allowed three runs in 1.1 innings of failed relief for ENMU.
LCU was unable to rally in the second game to complete the series sweep, as LCU's
Levi Westerlund and ENMU's Kendrick were amidst a pitchers' duel.
Brett Wilhelm singled in the first run of the game in the first inning for a 1-0 LCU, but the lead would vanish in the third inning. Four hits, including a double from Chris Sanders, helped ENMU capitalize on an opening pair of hits in the third inning and the Greyhounds plated three unearned runs in the inning for a 3-1 lead. McFall scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jose Favela in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2, but it would be as close as LCU would get.
Kendrick went six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) off four hits. He struck out eighth LCU bat-ters and improved to 1-0 on the season. Kiegan Basso claimed the save striking out the side in the bot-tom of the seventh inning for his first save of the year. All three ENMU runs were unearned runs, as Westerlund went the distance for his second career complete game as a Chap. In seven innings, he al-lowed eight hits and struck out seven batters falling to 1-2 on the season.
Charles Sandberg Jr. led ENMU at the plate in the second game with a 3-for-4 performance. Powe was 2-for-3 and had two of LCU's four hits in the game.
Powe combined to go 4-for-7 on the day with a pair of doubles in the doubleheader. LCU moved to 7-6 overall with the split. ENMU ended a five-game losing streak with their win and it helped avoid a three-game series sweep to the Chaps. They move to 4-7 overall.
The game was LCU's final game before conference play begins. They are scheduled to begin Heartland Conference play Friday at 3 p.m. in Fort Smith, Ark. against Arkansas – Fort Smith. UAFS is 6-0 on the season and was idle this weekend due to weather cancelling their scheduled series at Truman State.
