WICHITA, Kan. (March 7, 2015) – Lubbock Christian took a pair of wins from Newman with a game one 10-0 victory that included four home runs followed by a come from behind defeat of the Jets in which the Lady Chaps were down 8-7 in the top of the seventh before compiling eight runs and shutting down NU in the bottom of the frame for a 15-8 conquest.
Courtney McGee (6-2) led LCU in the first game by pitching her second shutout of the season, allowing just three hits. At the plate, Sydney Beuthien, Sammie Murrietta, Jessica Loiacano and Addison Ard all notched homers, attributing to eight of LCU's 10 runs, beginning with a slam by Loiacano in the first inning to put the Lady Chaps (14-5, 4-0 Heartland) up 3-0.
Molly Davison added a fourth run on a throwing error by Newman in the same inning before Beuthien homered to left field in the fourth for two more, and Murrietta followed up with a long ball of her own to increase the lead to 7-0. Ashton Bell took advantage of another Jet error, scoring on a fielding miscue in the fifth. Addison Ard then stepped in to pinch hit and did her job well, sending one over center field for another pair of runs and the 10-0 advantage that held through the bottom of the frame to end the game.
Game two was more of a contest, as the Lady Chaps racked up five runs in the second inning to jump out to a 6-3 lead before going scoreless in the next two innings and adding a run in the fifth, compared to five by Newman to put the Jets up 8-7 leading into the seventh.
Leadoff batter Liz Torres tied the game at 8-8 with a shot to left center, but a pair of groundouts had LCU on the verge of ending the inning. However, up next was Katlin Reed, who was hit by a pitch, made her way to third on a Faith Koria single and crossed the plate on a Murrietta single to put the Lady Chaps up 9-8. A double down the left field line by Loiacano scored Murrietta and Koria to extend the lead to 11-8. Davison took a walk, and pinch runner Jenny Rigney proceeded to third on a wild pitch, before Bell brought her home on a single to third base for a four-run advantage.
Torres reached first by way of an NU fielding error, bringing Bell to second and Davison to third, setting up Reed who came through with a double to right field, scoring three more Lady Chaps for a 15-8 advantage.
A trio of groundouts by the Jets in the bottom of the seventh ended the game, giving Kelsey Hoppel (3-0) the win with six hits, three strikeouts and four walks.
The Lady Chaps wrap up the series at Newman tomorrow at 11 a.m.
