Texas – (November 1, 2016) : Lubbock Christian University gave a sneak peak to the 2016-17 men's basketball season with their only exhibition game of the season.
Brennen Fowler scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the first half and led Lubbock Christian University to a 75-59 win over rival Wayland Baptist Tuesday night inside Rip Griffin Center.
Wayland Baptist jumped out early as a three-pointer by Maurice Redmond opened the door for Wayland and allowed the Pioneers to navigate to an early 9-4 lead four minutes into the contest. This would prove to be WBU's largest lead of the game. A quick jumper by
Tyler Rogers sparked a 9-2 run for the Chaps and gave them a 13-11 lead 6:31 into the game. There were six lead changes in the game, and all occurred during the first half. There was a 10 minute span in which neither team could produce more than a three point lead, until
Brennen Fowler showed his range by knocking down a three-pointer to put the Chaps up 29-24 with 5:43 left in the first half. From that point on, LCU went on a 12-2 run to end the first half for a 38-26 lead over the Pioneers. Lubbock Christian had a 14-6 advantage in points off of turnovers in the half and
Marcos Schuster added nine points in the half off the bench to give LCU a 16-6 edge in points from the bench. Lubbock Christian went 10-of-10 from the charity stripe in the first half to give the Chaps a nine-point advantage (10-1) in points from the free-throw line. Fowler went 6-of-8 from the field and helped LCU shoot 56.5% (13-23) in the field goal category for the first half.
Ridrell Holman opened the second half with his second three-pointer of the game to help the Chaps continue their eventual 15-2 run. Wayland chipped away at the Lubbock Christian lead with a 9-2 run to put the score at 47-41, but that would be as close as the Chaps would allow the Pioneers to get for the remainder of the game. An ensuing free throw by
Michael Grant allowed Lubbock Christian to go on a 17-4 run for a 64-48 lead. The 19-point lead proved to be the largest of the game. The double-digit deficit was more than the Pioneers could overcome, and a dunk by
Chuck Kendley wrapped up the Chaps eventual 75-59 victory over Wayland Baptist.
The Chaps won the battle in the paint in the second half as they held an 18-6 edge over the Pioneers. Holman scored on four three-pointers in the game to help the Chaps shoot 6-of-16 from behind the arc for the game.
Fowler led all scorers with 23 points on top of grabbing seven rebounds for the evening. Holman and Rogers each added 12 points with all of Holman's points coming from three-point land. Rogers went 4-of-4 from the free throw line to help LCU convert 17 of 22 (77.3%) for the game. LCU won the battle of the boards as they had a 32-28 edge over the Pioneers in rebounds.
The Chaps will now turn their attention towards the regular season opener against Regis University Nov. 11. The game is also their home opener and is part of the RMAC/Heartland Conference Challenge hosted inside Rip Griffin Center.
