Lady Chaps fall twice to open conference

AUSTIN, Texas (February 26, 2016) – The Lady Chaps fell to St. Edward's 2-1 and 6-5 in a doubleheader to open Heartland Conference play at Diane Daniels Field Friday.

THE MORGANS
In game one of the doubleheader, LCU (16-7, 0-2 Heartland) found themselves in a game dominated by pitching. Only three runs would be scored in the game with the Lady Chaps getting on the board first in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Morgan Colburn to score Lindzi Clemmer. The Hilltoppers (12-6, 2-0 Heartland) took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Morgan Dufour hit a two-run home run down the left field line.

PITCHER'S DUEL
Ashlee Rex (2-1) notched her second win of the season by going six innings of game one, only allowing one run off of two hits and striking out one Lady Chap. Lauren Slatten came in to pitch the seventh inning to notch her first save of the year. Katera Eltsoise (9-3) suffered her third loss of 2016 going the distance and allowing two runs off of five hits while striking out five Hilltoppers.

MORE MORGANS
In game two, the two Morgans also led the way for their respective teams. Colburn went two-for-three with two home runs to drive in three of LCU's five runs, and Dufour also went two-for-three to bring in two of the Hilltoppers' six runs. Colburn's second home run of the game came as a two-run shot in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5. LCU would hold in the bottom of the seventh to force the game into extra innings.

FREE SOFTBALL
Prior to today, the Lady Chaps were 3-0 in extra inning games this season. In the bottom of the eighth, the Hilltoppers' speedy Breah Whitten led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second two pitches later when an illegal pitch was called on LCU, the eighth called against the Lady Chaps in the game. St. Edward's leadoff batter Alex Mayfiled then singled to left field to score Whitten and give LCU their first extra-inning loss of the year.

IN THE CIRCLE
Ashton Bell got the start for the Lady Chaps going one-and-a-third innings but was plagued with seven illegal pitches called against her, two of which led to Hilltopper runs. Katlyn Holmes (5-2) pitched five and two-third innings suffering her second loss of the year. Eltsosie came in with one runner on in the eighth to face three batters before giving up the walk-off hit. Slatten (7-3) threw all eight innings for SEU garnering her seventh win of the season.
