WICHITA, Kan. (February 6, 2016) – Lubbock Christian University failed to withstand a closing 13-3 run by Newman in an 84-76 loss that snapped the five-game win streak by the Chaparrals Saturday afternoon inside Fugate Gymnasium to bump LCU down into a two-way tie for third place in the Heartland standings.
The Chaps (15-7, 9-5 Heartland) now sit alongside Texas A&M International in the third spot in the conference while Dallas Baptist leads the pack at 10-3 followed by Rogers State and Arkansas-Fort Smith at 9-5. St. Edward's is a game behind LCU and TAMIU at 8-6 as three weeks remain in the regular season.
Marcos Schuster scored a season-high 21 points, and
Matthew Alford recorded his second career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
A.J. Luckey, the Chaps' leading scoring, was held to seven points after posting a season-best 31 at Oklahoma Christian in Thursday night's win.
Newman's Gavin Thurman hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to break a 73-73 tie with just under two minutes to play and teammate Daniel Nwosu drained one from the left side to double the lead of the Jets to 79-73 with less than a minute remaining. Two free throws by Schuster with 21 seconds left cut the deficit to 79-74, but the Chaps turned the ball over on the next possession and committed a foul. Thurman converted two free throws, and Jalen Love posted a dunk for an 83-75 advantage with 11 seconds to go to stamp the victory.
The Jets (13-9, 6-8 Heartland) led by as many as 13 in the first half following a pair of free throws from Nwosu with 4:15 on the clock. Scores in the paint by
Michael Grant and Alford along with a jumper by
Isaac Cardona pulled the Chaps to within seven with 2:17 to go before the break. Two shots from the line by Alford capped a 7-0 LCU run before NU's Jarvis Williams pushed the margin to 36-29 heading into the locker room.
During the second half, the Chaps again found themselves down by double-digits trailing 64-53 with seven minutes to go. Two shots from the line by
Tyler Rogers and an and-one by
Brennen Fowler sliced the gap to 64-58. Two more three-point plays ensued, one by Love and another from Luckey, to pull LCU to within 67-63 at the 5:24 mark.
Schuster drove through the middle for the bucket and the foul to bring the Chaps closer at 69-66 and tied things up at 71-all with a three from the left wing with four minutes to play. Fowler came through by swatting a Jet shot attempt into the hands of the Chaps before hitting his go-ahead bucket with 3:02 remaining, but Newman went on to outscore LCU by 10 in the final minutes.
For Newman, Thurman and Nwosu each tallied 18 points while James Pegues and Williams both had 14.
The Chaps return home to host Arkansas-Fort Smith Thursday at 8 p.m.
