Lady Chaps take two from Dustdevils

LUBBOCK, Texas (April 15, 2016) – Lubbock Christian University softball swept the Friday doubleheader against Texas A&M International with scores of 5-1 and 12-4 at PlainsCapital Park.

LATE BLOOMERS
In game one the Dustdevils (22-29, 10-10) got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when Chelsea Capello doubled down the left field line to score Anna Parnin. The Lady Chaps (38-11, 15-5) wouldn't cross the plate until the bottom of the fifth inning when Lindzi Clemmer singled to right field to score Sydney Beuthien. Two batters later after Ashton Bell's infield single, Katera Eltsosie hit a ball to left field that scored Clemmer. Morgan Colburn then came to the plate and blasted her NCAA-leading 21st homerun to plate three more runs for LCU.

STRIKEOUT
Katera Etsosie (19-5) started in the circle for the Lady Chaps going the distance allowing only one run off eight hits to earn her 19th win of the year. Eltsosie broke her personal, single-game strikeout record by striking out 12 Dustdevils. Her previous best of 11 was against Abilene Christian in February of 2013. Delainy Thompson (10-12) got the start for TAMIU throwing the first four and one-third innings surrendering three runs off four hits while walking four batters. Krystal De La Cruz came in and threw two-thirds of an inning allowing two runs off two hits, walking two Lady Chaps along the way. Brandi Giles moved from first base to pitcher to go the final inning not allowing any runs or hits.

EARLY BIRDS
LCU jumped on the board first in game two plating six runs in the first inning. Leadoff batter Clemmer singled up the middle followed by a double by Bell that scored Clemmer. Eltsosie immediately followed with a double of her own to swap places with Bell. Two batters later Molly Davison doubled to right center field to score Eltsosie. Sammie Murrietta had an infield single followed by a hit up the middle by Beuthien bringing Davison home. After Kelsey Hoppel drew a walk, Clemmer singled to deep left field to score Murrietta and Beuthien. In the top of the second LCU gave up a run before scoring another six runs in the bottom of the second to take a 12-1 lead with Davison scoring off a hit by Murrietta before Beuthien hit a bomb over the left field fence to score herself, pinch runner Jenny Rigney and Murrietta. Both Hoppel and Clemmer walked before Shlay Denison, pinch-hitting for Eltsosie, hit a ball the short stop had trouble handling allowing Hoppel and Clemmer to score. The Dustdevils got another run in the third inning when Capello homered to left center to make the score 12-2. The Dustdevils would get their final two runs off back-to-back home runs by Ashley Hight and Brandi Giles.

IN THE CIRCLE
Katlyn Holmes (17-4) got the start for Lubbock Christian in game two going four innings allowing two runs on three hits striking out four to notch her 17th victory as a Lady Chap. Savanna Luke came in to relieve Holmes allowing two runs on three hits without recording an out before being replaced with Abbi White who took the circle to get the final three outs striking out two not allowing a hit. Krystal De La Cruz (4-9) started in the circle for the Dustdevils only lasting one-third of an inning giving up four runs on four hits suffering her ninth loss this year. Giles came in to pitch the final three and two-third innings allowing an additional eight runs on nine hits.
