LUBBOCK, Texas (April 22, 2016) – Lubbock Christian University swept their Friday Heartland Conference doubleheader against Newman University with a 10-9 walk off win in the eighth inning of game one and a 5-0 shutout in game two at PlainsCapital Park.
EXTRAS
In game one, LCU (41-12, 18-5) got on the scoreboard first with a
Katlin Reed single to score pinch runner
Baylee Goolsby in the second inning. The Lady Chaparrals would score two more runs in the third inning when
Ashton Bell scored on a Jets error and
Katera Eltsosie scored off a double by
Liz Torres. Newman (18-34, 7-16) got two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth before adding three more in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead. LCU responded in the bottom of the sixth inning with three hits and a walk to tie the game. Neither team scored in the seventh inning forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, pitcher Katie Ingles drove in Rachael Withers and centerfielder Taylor Mannis doubled to drive in Delaney Hiegert to go up 9-7. In the bottom of the inning, Eltsosie hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Clemmer and cut the lead to one.
Morgan Colburn drew a walk to give the Lady Chaps runners at first and third with two outs when
Molly Davison doubled to right field for the walk-off win.
GROUP EFFORT
Eltsosie got the start for the Lady Chaps in the circle and went five innings allowing four runs off four hits striking out two Jets.
Katlyn Holmes came in to pitch the sixth inning and allowed three runs off four hits before
Kelsey Hoppel (2-0) threw the final two innings giving up only one earned run off two hits striking out one to notch her second win of the year. Kate Smith started for the Jets and went five innings surrendering five runs off nine hits before being relieved by Katie Ingles (7-10), who pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing five runs on three hits and walking five Lady Chaps on her way to her 10
th loss of the season.
BOMB
The Lady Chaps got on the scoreboard early scoring two runs in the first inning, with Clemmer scoring on a throwing error by the Jets third baseman before Davison drove in Bell. LCU would complete their scoring in the fifth inning plating three runs off a three-run bomb by Reed.
SHUTOUT
Katlyn Holmes (18-4) got the start for Lubbock Christian in game two going the distance to secure her 18
th win of the season and notching her fifth shutout this season. Holmes allowed just five hits and struck out four Jets batters. Jensen Cromer (3-7) started in the circle for Newman, throwing the first 3.1 innings and allowing all five LCU runs off six hits to suffer her seventh loss this season. Kate Smith came in to pitch the final 2.2 innings in relief for the Jets allowing four more hits while striking out three LCU hitters.
SENIOR DAY
The two teams will face-off again Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at PlainsCapital Park.
