SAN ANGELO, Texas (February 18, 2017) – The No.6 Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals received another home run from
Caleb Koedyker, his third of the series, but the Chaps pitching could not quiet the bats of No.8 Angelo State, who produced 14 runs off 17 hits and defeated LCU 14-6 Saturday night at Foster Field.
Koedyker hit a three-run home run to right-centerfield to highlight a five-run third inning, as it followed a two-run double by
Logan Nethercot. The five-run third inning put LCU up 5-1 after surrendering a solo home run to ASU's Steve Pinales in the second inning.
LCU's lead did not last long, as the Rams tallied a run in the bottom of the third inning and manufactured a five-run fourth inning. Aided by a pair of errors, the Rams took advantage of the errors along with a hit batter, a wild pitch and a walk with a sacrifice fly by Elias Aguirre and a Jay Gonzales double to take a 7-5 lead.
Tony Reyes, extending a hit streak to eight games, singled in Koedyker, who reached on a double, and LCU cut the deficit to 7-6 in the fifth inning, but LCU would get no closer. ASU scored seven unanswered runs, with a five-run eighth inning closing the books on the contest.
ASU sent nine batters to the plate in the eighth inning and produced five runs off five hits and took advantage of LCU's fifth error of the game. Six batters came to the plate with two outs, but four straight two-out hits prolonged the inning and continued the damage for the Rams.
The Rams took advantage of the early portions of the inning. They were 7-for-8 getting the lead-off batter aboard and had a runner at third base with less than two outs on eight occasions. The Rams had a tough time getting the runner home with less than two outs (only three times), but they had five two-out base hits and five two-out RBI tallied in the game.
Jacob Boston was 3-for-5 with four runs-batted-in to lead ASU at the plate. Six Rams had at least two hits in the game, as they finished with 17 hits. Koedyker led LCU at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with a double, homer and three RBI. Netchercot was 2-for-3 as LCU's only other multi-hit performer.
Christian Marquez suffered his first loss on the hill this season (2-1). He went four innings and allowed seven runs off eight hits, with only two of the runs counted as earned. Six of ASU's eight runs were unearned off LCU's five errors. Ken Schroter started for ASU and claimed the win (3-0), as he allowed six runs off six hits in five innings.
LCU falls to 7-3 on the season and have lost consecutive games for the first time this season. ASU extended their win streak to seven games and are 7-1 on the season. The two teams wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Foster Field.
