LUBBOCK, Texas (March 31, 2017) – A walk-off win on a wild pitch in game two gave the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals a 4-3 victory to salvage the split after falling 12-3 in game one to the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's University at PlainsCapital Park Friday on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night.
BEHIND
The third batter of the game, Kayla Appleby doubled to score Alex Mayfield and put St. Edward's (13-22) on top 1-0 after the first inning. The Lady Chaps (22-12) would answer in the second inning when
Adelae Vayas scored from third on a wild pitch. In the top of the third the Hilltoppers would add two more runs to take a 3-1 lead.
ERRORS
The Lady Chaps committed three errors in the top of the seventh inning allowing SEU to score nine runs, none of which were earned. The Lady Chaps plated two more runs in the bottom of the inning when
Casey Ingram singled to left field to drive in
Haley Hardison and
Lindzi Clemmer.
IN THE CIRCLE
Katlyn Holmes (4-2) started in the circle for LCU and pitched 6.1 innings allowing only two earned runs off nine hits while striking out four Hilltoppers to fall for just the second time this season.
Cassie Sutton came in and recorded the final two outs giving up three hits and allowing two runs to score. Lauren Slatten (6-7) went the distance for St. Edward's giving up three runs off seven hits striking out eight Lady Chaps to earn her sixth win this season.
WILD
The Lady Chaps got on the scoreboard first in game two in the bottom of the second inning when
Katera Eltsosie scored from third base on a wild pitch then one batter later
Alyssa Hanks scored from third on a wild pitch to put LCU up 2-0. In the fifth inning SEU would even the score with two runs of their own.
WILD AGAIN
In the top of the sixth the Hilltoppers would take the 3-2 lead when Ashley Nassy would score off the bat of Alex Mayfield. In the bottom of the seventh
Sydney Beuthien hit a shot up the middle to plate
Averi Miller and tie the game 3-3 while advancing
Courtney Medina to third base. Another wild pitch from SEU pitcher Ashlee Rex to the next batter would allow Medina to score the winning run for a walk-off victory.
TEAMWORK
Monique Garcia got the start in the circle for the Lady Chaps going four innings allowing one run off five hits striking out six before giving way to
Katera Eltsosie (11-4) who pitched the final three innings allowing two runs off two hits striking out three Hilltoppers to notch her 11
th victory of the year. Ashlee Rex (3-10) went the distance for St. Edward's giving up four runs on seven hits walking three for her 10
th loss this season.
HONORED
All of the LCU faculty and staff members were honored in between the games with each of the four seniors for the Lady Chaps recognizing a faculty or staff member who has had a profound impact on their college career.
