Lady Chaps Knock Off Aggies Before Season Ends Falling to Mavericks

SAN ANGELO, Texas (May 12, 2017) – The No. 8-seed Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals send home No. 5-seed Cameron 14-11 before their season came to an end falling 3-2 to No. 11 (4-seed) Colorado Mesa at Mayer Field on the campus of ASU in San Angelo, Texas Friday in the South Central Regional.

BEHIND
The Lady Chaps (40-19) gave up three runs in the top of the first inning to Cameron (33-20) before scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the first off a two-run bomb by Sydney Beuthien. LCU would allow the Aggies to get six more runs in the top of the second inning to fall behind 9-2. Averi Miller drove in Lindzi Clemmer in the bottom half of the second before the Lady Chaps allowed Cameron to turn around and get the run back in the top of the third.

COMEBACK
Trailing 10-3 the Lady Chaps put four runs across in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 10-7 when Katera Eltsosie knocked in Casey Ingram followed by a bases-loaded, pinch-hit triple from Haley Hardison to bring in Shelby Welch, Clemmer and Adelae Vayas. LCU completed the comeback getting six more runs in the fourth inning starting with a three-run rocket over the left field fence by Eltsosie before Roxy Curiel drove in Addison Ard. Then Averi Miller doubled to plate Clemmer and Vayas. The Aggies added one run in the sixth inning and Lubbock Christian answered with one of their own when Beuthien drove in Miller.

IN THE CIRCLE
Katlyn Holmes started in the circle for the Lady Chaps going 1.2 innings allowing nine runs on nine hits before being relieved by Monique Garcia (11-6) who went four innings allowing two runs on five hits to garner her 11th victory this season. Katera Eltsosie (1) threw the last 1.1 innings not allowing a hit to get her first save of 2017. Bethany Hines got the start for the Aggies lasting three innings giving up 10 runs on 11 hits before giving way to Alyssa Osterdock (8-12) who pitched the final three innings giving up four more runs on four hits to suffer her 12th loss of the year.

SCORELESS
The second game of the day for the Lady Chaps was drastically different with neither team scoring through the first three innings. Sydney Beuthien got the LCU on the scoreboard first with a rocket over the left field fence to leadoff the bottom of the fourth inning. The Aggies would answer in the top of the fifth with a solo home run from Bailey Kleespies to tie the game. Eltsosie drove in Beuthien in the bottom of the sixth giving the Lady Chaps a 2-1 lead going into the seventh.

OBSTRUCTION
With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh the Aggies hit a ball to left field that scored the first runner before Vayas threw the second runner out at the plate. On the same play LCU catcher, Sara Ralston, threw over to third to try and get the runner advancing but the ball got past the third baseman, which led to left fielder Vayas then throwing home to get the runner trying to score. It appeared Ralston tagged the runner as she went into her slide, but the home plate umpire called Ralston for obstruction allowing the go-ahead run to score.

IN THE CIRCLE
Monique Garcia started in the circle for Lubbock Christian going five innings allowing one run off two hits before being relieved by Katera Eltsosie (21-7) who threw the final two innings allowing two runs on three hits to suffer her seventh loss of 2017. Kimbri Herring (15-1) got the start for Colorado Mesa going the distance giving up two runs on six hits to notch her 15th win of the year.

2017
The loss brings an end to the 2017 season for the Lady Chaps. In only their second season of postseason LCU repeated as Heartland Conference Tournament Champions making the South Central Regional for the second straight year. The Lady Chaps co-led the league with six players on the All-Heartland Conference Team and landed four on the Heartland All-Tournament Team. Losing only four seniors from the 2017 squad means the Lady Chaps will have a lot of experience returning for the 2018 campaign.
