LUBBOCK, Texas (February 11, 2018) –
Callan Johnson allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings in his Chaparrals debut and No.7 Lubbock Christian University used 10 singles to defeat Regis 3-0 for their first win of the season at Hays Field.
Johnson (1-0) faced two batters over the minimum in his seven innings of work and did not allow a hit through the first 3.1 innings pitched (11
th batter faced). Following the infield single by Connor Rochon, the Rangers would go another 10 batters without a hit until Andrew Bryniaski's single in the seventh inning with two outs.
Conley Green and
Nick Hooper helped combine for LCU's first shutout win of the season. Green, a freshman, made his LCU debut by striking out the side in his inning of work in the eighth inning. Hooper retired the Rangers in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.
LCU put to bed any thoughts of a fourth consecutive game of four hits or less early with
Logan Nethercot leading off the bottom of the first inning with a hit up the middle.
Andrew Pratt followed with a single and Nethercot scored on a groundout by Dylan Drury for a 1-0 lead. Nethercot's hit was LCU's first hit prior to the fifth inning this season. Fortunately the Chaps, they were able to do away many of those trends, as they were retired in order only once in the contest. LCU strung together a trio of hits in the fourth inning, with
Braden Hayward's single scoring a run and setting up a sacrifice fly from Nethercot for a 3-0 lead.
Hayward finished the game 2-for-3, and was joined by Nethercot (2-for-4) and
Andres Negron (2-for-4), who also had multi-hit performances. The Chaps had 10 hits in the game and all were singles.
Matt Heibuilt (3-0) started on the mound and the lefty allowed three runs off six hits. Cobe Karhoff, Heibuilt's high school teammate in Gilbert, Ariz., replaced Heibuilt and did not allow a run in 3.1 innings pitched.
LCU avoided their first four-game home series sweep since 1994 and improved their record to 1-3 on the young season. RU fell to 3-1. The win evened the all-time series with Regis at 3-3. The Chaps remain home Friday to open a three-game series with Angelo State.
