LCU Improves to 12-0 in Season Openers With Win Over Falcons

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 1, 2019) – Lubbock Christian University opened the 2019 season at PlainsCapital Park with a 10-2 victory Friday night over University of Texas of the Permian Basin in the opening day of the TAJ Hospitality College Softball Kickoff.
 
LCU played from behind, scoring 10 unanswered runs to have the game end with a walk-off RBI-single by K'leigh Arredondo to activate the run-rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.

LCU Highlights:
  • Jordan Wehr made her return from a life-threatening automobile accident in the fall of 2017 and served as LCU's opening day starter. She went 3.1 innings without a decision and allowed one run off six hits (all singles) and struck out a pair of batters.
  • Freshman Savannah Wysocki made her LCU and college debut batting leadoff and went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI.
  • Heartland Conference preseason all-conference selections Lindzi Clemmer (2-for-3) and K'leigh Arredondo (2-for-4) each had multi-hit performances. Blinn College transfer Alivia Villarreal also had a two-hit outing in her LCU debut (2-for-3)
  • Seven players made their LCU debut, including pitcher Taylor Franco, who pitched 1.2 innings of relief and claimed the win (1-0) while retiring all five batters faces.

Turning Point:
With LCU trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning, Wysocki hit a bases-loaded three-run triple to give LCU a 3-2 lead. Clemmer, the next batter, helped LCU complete back-to-back triples with a deep fly ball off the left field fence. The back-to-back triples ignited a nine-run inning.
 
How it Happened:
  • Alyssa Lopez opened the scoring for UTPB with an RBI-single in the second inning. The Falcons extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning.
  • LCU sent 13 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, producing nine runs off six hits. Wysocki and Clemmer's back-to-back triples highlighted the inning.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, Wysicki and Clemmer reached base, which set up a walk-off single to left field by Arredondo.
 
 Inside the Numbers:
  • LCU was 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position, with K'leigh Arredondo going 2-for-2 with runners in scoring position.
  • Pitchers Jordan Wehr and Taylor Franco combined for five innings pitched with no walks issued. LCU pitchers went seven games last season without allowing a walk.
  • LCU grounded out once in the game, as they flew out seven times. On the flip side, LCU retired nine Falcon batters via ground outs and two in fly-outs.
  • The Lady Chaps are 12-0 all-time in season openers.
  • The win over UTPB placed LCU 24-0 all-time against UTPB. LCU will face UTPB on Feb. 9 in Lubbock.
Up Next:
LCU plays their first doubleheader Saturday, hosting Southern Nazarene (4 p.m.) and Chadron State College (6 p.m.) in the second day of action at the TAJ Hospitality College Softball Kickoff.
