Chaps Fall to No. 8 Mustangs

Lubbock Christian Leads in Shots Despite Loss

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 16, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University lost for just the second time this season when out-shooting their opponent, as Midwestern State won 3-0 on Saturday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
 
The Chaps (4-5-1, 1-1-1) fired off 12 shots in the game, two of which were on goal, while the Mustangs (10-1-0, 2-0-0) attempted only eight shots with three on goal.
 
LCU started with the shots early, as Niklas Neuman took the first in just the 13th minute and Tariq Bakkali attempted another that missed left in the 20th minute, but it was the defenses who controlled early.
 
On Midwestern State's third shot, they were able to get it on frame, with Trevor Amann sneaking one past LCU goalkeeper Braxton Thorne in the 33rd minute to take the lead. Lubbock Christian had one more shot before halftime, but Juan Jose Valdez Lopez's attempt was blocked and the Chaps went into the break down a goal.
 
The Mustang offense continued to press for a second goal early in the second half with several more shots and, and they finally doubled their score in the 58th minute thanks to Julian Barajas.
 
Luciano Rodriguez was able to put the first Lubbock Christian shot on goal in the 61st minute as the Chaps tried to get back into the game, but it was saved by the MSU goalkeeper. LCU's offense seemed to click more in the final 30 minutes, which is when they took eight of their 12 total shots, but none were able to find the back of the net.
 
Rodriguez had another shot on goal saved in the 69th minute, and Pablo Galietero Diez had a great chance in the 76th minute, when his shot just glanced off the post, but the Chaparrals were unable to find the back of the net.
 
A foul called in the box in the 88th minute led to a penalty kick goal by James Doyle for the Mustangs, sealing their 3-0 win.
 
Lubbock Christian is off on Wednesday and will be on the road for their next match, taking on UT Tyler at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Perkins Soccer Complex.
