LUBBOCK, Texas (October 20, 2021) – The Lubbock Christian University women's soccer team lost at home for just the second time this season, falling 1-0 to Angelo State on Wednesday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
The Lady Chaps drop to 7-3-2 with the loss and are now 4-3-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
With two of the top four teams in the conference in goals against average meeting, it was sure to be a defensive battle Wednesday night in Lubbock, and the first half proved that to be true. Neither team was able to score in the opening 45 minutes, and the offensive chances in general were limited.
LCU did not attempt a shot before halftime, and Angelo State attempted only four, although three of those were on goal. Lady Chap keeper
Hannah Wise made the save every time. There were no cards in the game overall and just four fouls in the first half with no stoppages, so the break came quickly with the teams still knotted at zero.
Not long into the second half though, the Belles broke through. They earned a corner kick in the 48
th minute, which Avery McNeme took. She served in a ball toward the back post, where a leaping Gabby Villagrand headed it home.
ASU took just one shot the entire rest of the game, but their defense made the one goal be enough for the win, despite more offensive pressure from the Lady Chaps.
Lubbock Christian attempted its first shot not long after the Villagrand goal, as
Madi Fuller missed high. Fuller was effective on offense late in the first half, earning her the start in the second half. She had another shot in the 80
th minute but it was deflected by a Belle defender.
The Lady Chaps' best chance to even the score came in the 76
th minute, when
Celia Duarte passed to
Brittany Jones at the top of the 18-yard box and Jones fired on frame but right at ASU keeper Kira Miller doing her part to keep the Belles' clean sheet.
Despite the loss, Lubbock Christian is still allowing an average of just 1.00 goals per game, and they actually lowered their shots per game allowed for the season to just 12.8.
LCU has another tough test coming up, as they will hit the road to take on Texas Womans at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Pioneer Soccer Park in Denton, Texas.
