LADY CHAP HEADERS
- Lubbock Christian University is on the road for the second straight game, facing Midwestern State, who is currently fourth in the conference standings
- The Lady Chaps are averaging 1.38 goals on 13.2 shots per game. Of their 172 total shots, 66 or 38.4 percent have been on goal, and seven players have attempted at least 10 shots
- Midwestern State is coming off a big 3-2 win on Saturday over West Texas A&M and they also beat Texas A&M-Commerce 1-0 a week ago
- Freshman Casie Watson had LCU's lone goal last Saturday against Texas Womans, scoring for the first time in her collegiate career. She scored in the closing seconds of the first half
- Megan Mirabal got the start in goal against Texas Woman's on Saturday. She made a pair of saves but also allowed two goals and suffered the first loss of her collegiate career (3-1-1)
LONE STAR-GAZING
With just four games left in the regular season, the Lady Chaps have some work left in order to play in the postseason. LCU is currently tied for eighth in the Lone Star Conference standings at 13 points, with the top seven teams at the end of the regular season advancing to the conference tournament. Oklahoma Christian, a team LCU tied 0-0 on Sept. 22, also has 13 points. DBU leads the league with 27 points, although their only conference loss was at the hands of the Lady Chaps. Three of the four teams left on the schedule are currently ahead of Lubbock Christian in the standings, so they could very well play themselves into postseason action.
NEWBIES
LCU has used several true freshman already this season, and more of them are being used for important minutes in the later games this season.
Avery Jennings has been a starter from the outset, playing in 11 of the 13 games and leading all freshmen with 677 minutes played. She has one goal this year and assisted two others.
Madi Fuller has been used more as the season wears on, setting new career-highs in minutes played in the last two games, and
Kenley Blevins has appeared in all but one contest this year. Mirabal, another true freshman, started on Saturday for her fifth game in goal.
Chloe Hinojosa and
Malena Watzlawik are two other freshmen who have seen significant playing time this year.
MAINSTAYS
Only two Lubbock Christian players have started in all 13 game this season, and another two have at least appeared in every contest. Jimenez leads the way, starting in all 13 and leading the team with 1110 minutes played. The Fort Worth native has played the full 90 in two of the last three Lady Chap games
Julie Shahi has also started all 13 and played 879 minutes. She assisted the game-winner against UT Tyler.
Makenna Pate (715 minutes) and
Brittany Jones (919 minutes) are the other two players who have appeared in all 13 games.
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
Through two-thirds of the season, LCU is allowing an average of just 1.08 goals per game from its opponents, which ranks in the top-half of the conference. Lady Chap opponents are averaging just 12.7 shots per game, and only 75 of those (45.4 percent) have been on goal. Captains
Shadiana Haney (1039 minutes) and
Madison Mayben (903 minutes) anchor the back line. Goalkeepers
Hannah Wise and Mirabal have also been a good last line of defense, combining for a save percentage of .727. LCU has shut out five teams this year, with four of those coming at home.
FAIR OR FOUL
Lubbock Christian has been able to apply all of this defensive pressure without being over physical, as they lead the Lone Star Conference with the fewest fouls per game. They have committed just 81 fouls in 13 games for an average of 6.23 per game. They have also only been shown seven yellow cards this year, and three of those came in the first game of the season.
ROAD JOURNAL
Lubbock Christian will be playing its second-to last road game of the season, where they are 3-2-1 with wins over CSU-Pueblo, Texas A&M International and Dallas Baptist. It is the second-straight road game for the Lady Chaps after Saturday's 2-1 loss to TWU in Denton. LCU is averaging 1.33 goals on 12.3 shots per game on the road, with 27 of those shots on goal. The Mustangs play at Stang Park, which is on the former grounds of Callum Stadium and has been the home of MSU soccer since 1972. It allows for 1200 spectators and features a 120x72 yard Bermuda grass playing surface.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State allows an average of 1.786 goals per game and holds opponents to just 1.00 per game
- MSU goalkeeper Taylor Camp ranks second in the LSC with a save percentage of .849. She has 62 saves on the year
- The Mustangs boast a balanced offense, with three different players having scored five goals already this season
- Ryan Spence is in his fourth season lead Midwestern State. He had just eight wins in the prior three seasons, but has already matched that number this year
- Midwestern State is second in the conference with an average of 8.86 shots on goal per game
