Chap Season Ends in LSC Championship

Conference Title Claimed 5-4 in PKs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (November 14, 2021) – Playing in the conference championship match for the first time ever as an NCAA program, the Lubbock Christian University men's soccer team took No. 8 Midwestern State to the limit but fell 5-4 in PKs.

Mustang goalkeeper and LSC All-Tournament Team Most Valuable Player Marc-Antoine Huzen made on save in the shootout and MSU made all five of their attempts to claim the league title.

The defensive struggle at Stang Park featured only nine shots on goal by the two teams combined. MSU had the first one by either team, but Juan Galindo's attempt in the 25th minute was saved by Braxton Thorne.

LCU had a pair of first half scoring chances, both in the last 10 minutes of the half. Tariq Bakkali had the first, and Hector Rodriguez-Cabo had another just before the break.

In the second half, the Mustangs more than doubled LCU's shot total, but the shots on goal were even at one apiece. Thorne stopped another shot in the 61st minute and Juan Jose Valdez Lopez had his attempt saved in the 74th minute, setting up overtime between the two squads.

The Chaps had early opportunities in the first overtime when they earned a pair of corner kicks, but neither one created a shot. LCU was then taken down to 10 men in the 96th minute when Luca Hollenstein was issued a second yellow. Still, Tomas Casas was able to get off another shot on goal in the 97th minute, which was also saved.

Midwestern State pressed hard for a goal in the second overtime, forcing Thorne into his most action of the day. He made two impressive saves, and another shot on goal by the Mustangs was stopped by an LCU defender, leading to the penalty kick shootout that ended the game.

Five field players – Ivan Muanze-Bengono, Jonathan Woods, Tomas Casas, Jacopo Ghezzi and Luciano Rodriguez – were on the field for all 110 minutes of the game.

For their performance's in this week's three games overall, Muanze-Bengono, Rodriguez and Thorne were named to the LSC All-Tournament Team.

The Chaps end their best season in program history 10-6-2 overall, having placed third in the Lone Star Conference with a 5-6-1 record. They averaged 2.17 goals per game and held their opponents to 1.22. Sunday's game goes in the books as their 10th shutout of the year, which is a program record.
