PORTALES, N.M (November 3, 2021) – The Lubbock Christian University women's soccer team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday night, taking down Eastern N.M. 1-0 at Greyhound Stadium.
The win broke a four-game skid for the Lady Chaps, who improved to 8-6-2 overall and 5-6-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
LCU recorded 19 shots in the win, which is tied for their third-most in a single game this season and their most since the Sept. 29 win against UT Permian Basin. Seven of those shots were on goal, and the Greyhounds actually matched the seven shots on goal, including six in the second half, but
Hannah Wise saved them all.
The Lady Chaps split up their scoring opportunities only slightly more evenly, putting two shots on goal in the first half and four in the second half. LCU's first actual scoring chance though, came less than one minute into the match.
Madi Fuller was on a tear to begin play. She quickly took the game's first shot and had it blocked, but just seconds later the Lady Chaps earned a free kick. The cross came into the back post where Fuller was waiting and she redirected it on goal, but it hit the crossbar and bounced back out.
In the 10
th minute, Lubbock Christian recorded its first shot on goal, with
Madison Mayben dribbling across midfield and shooting from 50 yards out, but it was saved.
Celia Duarte had a pair of shots miss before putting LCU's second shot on goal in the 25
th minute, but it was saved as well.
ENMU's first and only shot on goal of the first half came in the 38
th minute, but it did not have much power behind it and Wise grabbed it easily. On the counterattack, LCU had another good offensive chance when
Maddie Hoel got the ball out wide and sent it in to
Makenna Pate, but Pate's shot just sailed over the crossbar and the two teams remained tied heading into halftime.
The second half featured a lot more offense from both teams, and the Greyhounds were the ones to actually set that tone with a shot on goal just two minutes after the clock started. Lubbock Christian was the team to break the tie though, doing so in the 54
th minute.
A free kick from
Shadiana Haney started the play, before Duarte played the ball back to Shahi in the midfield. She sent a pass out wide to
Kaylen McNatt, who took two touches forward before firing on frame, just past the outstretched hands of the ENMU keeper into the top right corner of the goal. The goal was her first of the season, while Shahi notched her third assist.
Still with plenty of time left on the clock, Eastern New Mexico pushed hard for an equalizer. Wise was forced to make five more saves, including three in a three-minute span around the 79
th minute, but she did her part to keep the Greyhounds off the board and secure the eighth win of the season.
LCU's defense notched their sixth shutout of the year in the win, lowering their season goals against average to exactly 1.00, which is the fifth-best mark in the Lone Star Conference.
The Lady Chaps will wrap up the regular season this Saturday, as they host St. Mary's at 1 p.m. at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
