Chaps Lose Lead Late vs. No. 16 St. Mary’s

LCU Scores Twice in Loss

LUBBOCK, Texas (March 23, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University had a 2-1 lead for much of Tuesday night's matchup with No. 16 St. Mary's but allowed two late goals to lose 3-2 at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.

The battle between two of the top teams in the LSC dropped the Chaparrals to 4-2 on the year and 3-2 in LSC play, while St. Mary's improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in league action.

StMU led the attack to start the game, taking two shots and earning four corner kicks in the first 11 minutes of play. The effort led to the Rattlers scoring the game's opening goal in the 11th minute, as Alonso Rodriguez found the back of the net.

Lubbock Christian attempted its first shot of the game in the 15th minute and had three more in the next 15 minutes. St. Mary's had the next shot on goal, forcing a Braxton Thorne save in the 31st minute, but it was LCU who broke through next.

The Chaps earned an indirect free kick in the box in the 32nd minute and executed it to perfection, with Tariq Bakkali tapping the ball back to Luca Hollenstein, who fired it past the StMU keeper to tie the game.

Hollenstein's goal was his first in an LCU uniform and the assist by Bakkali was his second of the year.

Less than five minutes later, the Chaps took the lead. Hector Rodriguez-Cabo did the damage, unleashing a rocket from 25 yards out that scored in the upper right corner of the goal. It is his second goal of the season. Fernando Flores assisted for his second of the year.

In the second half, things got tense as Lubbock Christian worked to hold onto its lead. Both teams had shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of play, but they were saved. Thorne made another save for LCU in the 65th minute, and StMU missed with shots in the 67th, 78th and 83rd minutes.

The Chaps continued to hold on until the 87:30 mark, when St. Mary's finally broke through with a goal from Antony Andoyan. The Rattlers then were able to earn a corner kick at the 89:03 mark, and Rodriguez headed home the game-winner with only 34 seconds to play.

Lubbock Christian will face a quick turnaround as they travel to take on West Texas A&M at 1 p.m. on Saturday at The Pitch.
