Chaps Fall in Late-Night Battle at No. 12 Mustangs

Midwestern State Nets Three Second-Half Goals

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (September 29, 2021) – In a game that didn't start until close to 9:30 p.m. due to lightning in the area, Lubbock Christian University's men's soccer team fell 3-0 to No. 12 Midwestern State on Wednesday at Stang Park.

It was the final non-conference game of the season for the Chaps, who fall to 3-4 on the year. Lone Star Conference play will begin next Saturday, as they host West Texas A&M for a rematch against the nationally-ranked Buffs.

The first 45 minutes of play were a defensive struggle for both teams, as they combined for just five total shots, only one of which was on goal. LCU's one shot was taken by Kevin Mejias in the 12th minute, but it was blocked by the MSU defense.

Brandon Martinez-Trelles had the only shot on goal of the opening period for either team, with the scoring chance coming in the 38th minute, but LCU goalkeeper Braxton Thorne was there to make the save.

Midwestern State broke the scoreless tie four minutes into the second half with a goal from Trevor Amann. Then just 1:12 later, they doubled their lead when Mere Escobar scored from just inside the 18-yard box.

Lubbock Christian's offense continued to look for chances to get a goal and get back into the game, but they were few and far between against the MSU defense. In the 71st minute, the Mustangs added one final insurance goal from Martinez-Trelles.

The last scoring chance of the game for the Chaps came from Jeremy Chua, who came off the bench and almost immediately took a shot, but it was blocked.

LCU will have time to regroup after its first back-to-back losses of the season before entering LSC play at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex.
