LUBBOCK, Texas - Arely Jimenez and Lady Chaps head coach
Alex Denning both set milestones in matches played and wins as LCU knocked off Midwestern State 1-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
Jimenez needed just one minute of action to set a new program record. By simply stepping on the pitch, Jimenez played in her 78th career match, passing
Allison Scott for the most matches played in a career.
Once the game got rolling, both teams came out shooting, with Andy Holder tallying a shot in the 4th minute that was saved by Lexi Jackson. The Mustangs (5-8-1, 2-6-1 LSC) answered back in the eighth minute, with Olivia Okoye firing a shot towards the net that was corralled by Abby Kone for the save.
After a pair of shots from
Celia Duarte went wide,
Abcdee Herrera headed the ball back towards the senior, who fired a shot into the back of the net to put the Lady Chaps (7-2-6, 4-2-3 LSC) ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute.
Midwestern State tried to answer back in the 25th minute, but another big save from Kone kept LCU ahead at the break.
The Mustangs once again came out in the second half firing, but a shot from Keyara Zuniga in the 50th minute was once again stuffed by Kone.
In the 59th minute, the Lady Chaps almost extended the lead, but a pair of saves by Jackson against
Lexi De La Cruz and
Graycen Rasmussen kept the Mustangs alive in the contest.
With five minutes left, Cassidy Savoy got the last good chance for the Mustangs, but once again Kone kept the ball out of the net as Lubbock Christian picked up a 1-0 win over Midwestern State.
The win is Denning's 100th as coach of the Lady Chaps. In his 11 years as head coach of LCU, Denning has compiled a 100-66-22 record.
The shutout is the sixth of the season for the Lady Chaps and for Kone, who now sits fourth all time in shutouts already in her career. Her 56 saves already rank as the sixth most in program history and seventh most of any LCU keeper in one season.
With the goal, Duarte now ranks tied for seventh all-time with
Makenna Pate for career goals with 14. She now enters the top-10 all-time in shot attempts with 112 for her career.
The Lady Chaps head to Austin to face rival St. Edward's on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 1 PM
