LUBBOCK, Texas - An absolute laser by
Heriberto Campuzano with four minutes left in the first half, along with seven saves by
Tom Miles were all Lubbock Christian needed to upset no. 16 Oklahoma Christian 1-0 for their first conference win of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
Both teams came out hot on offense, with Pablo Diez recording a shot that was saved by Fynn Koerner just 77 seconds into the match. Oklahoma Christian's (7-2-2, 1-1-0 LSC) Joep Claassen answered in the fifth minute with a long shot that went right into the hands of Miles.
The Eagles peppered more shots at Miles, but none could hit on target, before Miles made another great save off a shot by John Osadolor Ighede in the 39th minute.
After a shot by
Tariq Bakkali was blocked, LCU (4-4-3, 1-0-1 LSC) picked up their first corner kick of the night in the 41st minute. The ball ricocheted off the head of
Jasper Reese, before Campuzano gathered the ball on the edge of the box, ripping a laser in the right corner of the net and giving the Chaps a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the 61st minute,
Tyler Little found himself one-on-one with Koerner, but the shot just curved off the top of the right post.
Jeremy Chua collected the rebound, but Koerner recovered to make another tough save.
The contest got physical late, with three yellow cards issued in the 83rd minute, but the Chaps still held on to a one goal lead. Diego Casero Comeche got one more chance to tie for the Eagles with 56 seconds left, but Miles recorded his seventh save and closed out his third shutout of the season as LCU knocked off Oklahoma Christian 1-0.
By simply stepping on the field this evening, Bakkali tied Gabriel Mendoza, Conner Dean, and Yuriy Sadula for the fourth-most matches played in program history. Bakkali has played 69 matches for the Chaps during his time in Lubbock.
LCU has now won two matches this season against nationally ranked teams. The Chaps are 2-0-1 this season against ranked programs, and 5-4-2 in their last 11 matches against nationally ranked teams.
The Chaps will face another ranked team this week, traveling to Wichita Falls to face no. 8 Midwestern State on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 3 PM
