LUBBBOCK, Texas - A goal by Alexandre Picoto Rodrigues with 50 seconds left in the second overtime period gave Oklahoma Christian the 2-1 victory over Lubbock Christian in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference men's soccer tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
Both teams started slow, with just two shots between the two sides in the first 23 minutes, before a
Felipe Mira foul just outside the box set up the Eagles (10-4-5) with a free kick outside the box. Elliot Forestier rifled a shot from 18 yards out that deflected off a Chap defender and into the net, giving OC a 1-0 lead.
Oklahoma Christian continued to pepper the box over the next ten minutes, but
Tom Miles came up with two big saves for Lubbock Christian (7-8-4) to keep the Chaps in the match and head to the break still down 1-0.
Miles continued to hold strong in the second half, picking up three saves in the 57th, 62nd, and 63rd minute as Oklahoma Christian could not extend their lead.
In the 77th minute,
Eric Embry fired the ball down field that deflected off an OC defender.
Pablo Galietero Diez picked up the rebound and laced a shot past the Oklahoma Christian goalkeeper, tying the match at one goal apiece.
The Eagles tried to break the tie in regulation, but Miles made two more saves in the final ten minutes, and the two squads headed to overtime.
In the first overtime period, John Osadolor Ighede and Isaias Silva sent two shots just wide of the net, and the teams entered a second overtime period still tied at one.
After a foul by
Hugo Staunton in the waning seconds of the second overtime, Joep Claassen sent a shot into the box that connected with Picoto Rodrigues' head, and Oklahoma Christian earned the 2-1 win with the late goal.
The win is Oklahoma Christian's first ever win in the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Eagles will face no. 6 St. Mary's in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4.
The loss sees the Chaps' season end with a 7-8-4 record, LCU's first losing season since going 4-5 in the spring 2021 season. Lubbock Christian did finish the year 4-3-2 in conference play.
Several Chaps saw their careers end after tonight's match with multiple milestones.
Tariq Bakkali finishes no. two all-time in career points with 56, tallying 10 career assists, the fourth most in school history. Bakkali's 23 goals are the second most in program history, as are his 123 career shot attempts, along with his 49 shots on goal. The senior played in 77 matches in his career, the most for any player in LCU history.
Galietero Diez became just the third player in program history to score 20 goals, the third most all-time. His 48 points are fourth most in school history, while his eight career assists are eighth most in program history. The senior finishes third all-time with 48 shots on goal and fourth with 104 career shot attempts.
