LUBBOCK, Texas - Russell Harrison and
Rowan Mackenzie combined for 56 points and 11 three-pointers as the Chaps rolled to an 85-61 win over Cameron inside the Rip Griffin Center on Friday, Dec. 30.
Lubbock Christian (8-3, 4-1 LSC) opened the game on a 7-0 run, thanks to a three from Harrison and a pull-up jumper from
Kurt Wegscheider. Mackenzie drained his first jumper of the game, before back-to-back threes from the Aussie put the Chaps on top 17-10 at the first media timeout with 14:00 left in the first half.
Harrison made two more from long range, before
Alec Zambie got in on the action from downtown, draining his first three-pointer of the night to put LCU on top 26-12. Harrison connected from the charity stripe on the old-fashion three-point play after a Cameron (2-10, 0-6 LSC) foul, and a jumper by
Aaron Gonzales put the Chaparrals on top 31-12 with 10:12 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Aggies went on a run of their own, as Caylen Goff-Brown started the run with a layup, before Colt Savage connected from deep. Andre Washington slid into the paint for a layup, and Savage got an and-1 play of his own, as Cameron cut the lead down to single digits, down 33-24 with 6:38 left in the first. Harrison and Gonzales hit a trio of three-pointers down the stretch to pull away from the advancing Aggs, and took a 46-30 advantage into the locker room at the break.
LCU opened the second half attacking the paint, with layups from Mackenzie, Wegscheider and Harrison, before the Lubbock native connected on another deep ball to swell the Chap bulge to 55-32 with 16:39 left. Another three from Mackenzie and a step-back jumper from the junior pushed the Chaps ahead even more, putting Lubbock Christian on top 62-38 with 13:32 remaining in the contest. Gonzales followed up with two more three-pointers, and LCU took a 68-40 lead halfway through the second half.
Cameron turned up the defensive pressure, forcing four LCU turnovers on four straight possessions, as back-to-back scoops and scores from Ernest Young and a three from Goff-Brown cut the Chap advantage down to 68-52. Gonzales hit another big three, but Goff-Brown answered, before
Najeeb Muhammad connected on his first shot from beyond the arc to give the Chaps a 74-55 lead with 6:32 remaining. Mackenzie hit another three, and Muhammad hit a jumper for good measure, and LCU took the wire-to-wire victory over Cameron, knocking off the Aggies 85-61.
As a team, the Chaps tied the single-game record for three-point attempts, attempting 45 shots from long range, tying the mark set on Oct. 30, 2009 against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College. LCU connected on 16 of those shots from deep, four away from tying the single-game record.
The Chaps were also perfect from the free-throw line for the first time this season, going 11-for-11 from the charity stripe. Mackenzie led the LCU team from the line, going 6-for-6.
The win moves LCU to 4-0 all-time against Cameron in Lubbock and ties the series at five wins for each team.
Todd Duncan also earned his 210th win as head coach for the Chaps.
Harrison and Mackenzie combined for 56 points, each scoring 28 points apiece. Harrison flirted with a double-double, hauling in eight rebounds. The grad transfer shot 7-for-15 from three, three makes away from tying the school record for made threes and one attempt from tying the single game record for three-point attempts in a game.
Mackenzie stuffed the stat sheet once again, adding seven rebounds and three assists. The junior was also a force defensively, with four steals and a career-high two blocks.
While he only scored five points, Muhammad set a new season-high in assists with nine. The Arizona Western transfer has set or tied his season-high for assists in back-to-back games. Gonzales also finished in double-digits with 11 points, hitting three shots from long range. Wegscheider also sniffed a double-double, with eight points and six boards.
DeSean Munson led Cameron with 14 points, three rebounds and a steal.
