Duncan Recognized as Small College Coach of the Year

04.27.2022

SUGAR LAND, Texas (April 27, 2022) – Four members of the Lubbock Christian men's basketball program were recognized with awards from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, the association announced on Tuesday.

All four Chaparrals were recognized with awards in the small college division. Todd Duncan was named the association's Coach of the Year, Jason Imes was named the Assistant Coach of the Year, Miro Szabados was named the Student Assistant of the Year and Parker Hicks was recognized as the Player of the Year.

The TABC was founded in 1975 in an effort to help the sport gain recognition in Texas and has since surpassed the 5,000-member mark, helping basketball grow in the Lone Star State.

Duncan and Imes led LCU to the best season in program history, as the Chaps set a new school record for wins with a 47-4 overall record. They started the year 20-0, reaching No. 1 in the national rankings, which was another program first, and eventually claimed a second-straight Lone Star Conference regular season title. The 2021-22 season was the 11th for the coaching duo to lead Lubbock Christian, and the Chaps have a 202-111 (.645) record in that time.

Szabados is a more recent addition to the Chaparral staff, but was a huge asset during the 2021-22 season thanks to his strong work ethic. He helped out all over the place, helping with everything from drills in practice and stats in game to cleaning uniforms and ordering food on the road.

Hicks was the D2CCA South Central Region Player of the Year as well as the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, winning the latter award for the second straight season. He led the Chaparrals in scoring and rebounding with 19.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Hicks shot 55.7 percent from the field to lead the conference in that category, including 43.0 percent from behind the arc. He played in all 31 LCU games, averaging 35.1 minutes per contest. An 85.2 percent shooter at the free throw line, Hicks also contributed 33 steals and 27 blocks during the season. Six times during the year, he was named the LSC Defensive Player of the Week, and he earned one Offensive Player of the Week award as well.

He scored in double-figures in every game of the season and collected 14 double-doubles. On February 8, Hicks set a new Lubbock Christian program record when he scored 50 points in a single game against Texas A&M International. In total, he scored 597 points during the 2021-22 season, which is the third most by a Chaparral player in school history.
