LUBBOCK, Texas - Trailing at halftime for the second match in a row, the Lady Chaps were able to rally and preserve a 2-2 draw against Colorado Mesa on Saturday, Sept. 10.
The Mavericks (2-3-1) took the score early, as Mira Houck found Mikayla Eccher open at the top of the box, who fired a shot over the head of Abby Kone in the 5th minute to put Colorado Mesa ahead 1-0 early.
The Mavs saw plenty more chances later in the first half, with Kone recording six saves in the first 45 minutes.
Lexi De La Cruz recorded the lone shot on goal in the opening salvo for the Lady Chaps (3-0-3), the shot being saved in the 6th minute by Chloe Dody.
Eccher opened up the second half with another shot on goal for the Mavs, but Kone was able to get the tip of her glove on the ball to keep the defecit at one.
After a foul by Colorado Mesa set up a free kick chance for LCU,
Madison Mayben fired a ball into the box that went off the head of
Graycen Rasmussen, before
Stephanie McClung was able to control the ball off her foot and find the back of the net in the 60th minute, tying the match at one goal apiece.
Ten minutes later, Lila Dere passed the ball to Haley Klasner, who found just enough room to send a shot toward the goal and just by the outstretched arm of Kone, giving Mesa the 2-1 lead in the 71st minute.
After another foul just outside the box by the Mavs,
Julie Shahi ripped an absolute laser to the top corner of the goal, and just 1:03 later, the Lady Chaps tied the contest back at two goals in the 73rd minute.
The Mavericks tallied three more shots on goal, but Kone was able to get her mitts on the ball, preserving the draw and keeping LCU undefeated after nonconference play.
The draw moves LCU to 8-0-4 in their last 12 nonconference matchups. The Lady Chaps do not have any more nonconference games scheduled for the rest of the 2022 season.
Kone is the first Lady Chap to tally at least ten saves in a match since
