Big shots down the stretch push Chaps over Mustangs

Rowan Mackenzie recorded his second straight double-double

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Rowan Mackenzie tallied his second straight double-double, while Russell Harrison scored his 1000th career point at an NCAA school as LCU held on for a 71-61 win over Midwestern State on Thursday, Jan. 26.

Both teams traded buckets early, with Gonzales hitting a three before Harrison drove down the lane for a slam dunk. The Mustangs (9-11, 6-8 LSC) took their first lead of the game with a three by Derrick Ogechi, putting Midwestern State on top 10-9 with 14:57 left in the first half.

After a jumper from Mackenzie, kept the Chaps (13-6, 9-4 LSC) down one, but LCU would go the next 4:11 of game time without a score. Despite the lack of offense for the Chaparrals, LCU's defense held Midwestern State to 1-for-4 from the field during that same stretch. A  Mackenzie three tied the game at 14, and a Harrison jumper gave Lubbock Christian a 16-14 advantage with 9:32 remaining in the opening stanza.

The two foes traded buckets, with a Najeeb Muhammad jumper being answered by the Mustangs three from Luke Hamilton to tie the game at 20. Back-to-back layups from Mackenzie pushed the Chap lead to three, before a three-pointer from Muhammad gave LCU a 30-24 lead at the break.

Harrison came out of the locker room on a mission, scoring the first five points of the half for the Chaparrals. A pair of jumpers from Kurt Wegscheider and a layup by Muhammad put the Chaps on top 43-31 with 15:14 left in the contest.

Lubbock Christian continued to stay hot from the field in the second half, with Muhammad and Harrison draining a pair of shots from long distance. Mason Gibson answered with a three of his own, but an old fashioned three-point play from Mackenzie pushed the LCU advantage to 52-36 with 10:57 remaining in the game.

Midwestern State began to crawl back, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a slam dunk down the lane for Marquis Davison, cutting the LCU lead back down to single digits. Muhammad ended the run with a layup, but a three from Gibson and a layup by Davison lowered the score to 54-48 with 6:14 remaining.

Layups from Wegscheider and Muhammad put the Chaparrals back up by double digits, but the Mustangs kicked off an 8-0 run with a Jermane Carter jumper. Pierre Sanders scored six points with a shot from beyond the arc and converted an and-1 play from the free throw line to cut the deficit to 58-56 with 3:06 left in the game.

Down the stretch, it was the play makers for the Chaps stepping up big again, with a triple by Mackenzie putting LCU back up by five. Harrison nailed a triple of his own, and Lubbock Christian went back on top 66-58 with 1:17 left. A three from Gibson got the Mustangs within seven, but the Chaparrals went 3-for-4 from the line in the final 32 seconds, holding on for  the 71-61 win.

Mackenzie tallied his second straight double-double, scoring 26 points and hauling down a career-high 11 rebounds. The junior also flirted with a triple-double, finishing with six assists. On the defensive end, Mackenzie tied his career-high with two blocks and also had a pair of steals.

With 17 points against the Mustangs, Harrison has now scored 1,001 career points at NCAA schools.
