Chap defense quiets UTPB in doubleheader sweep

LCU defense held Falcons to three runs across 14 innings

ODESSA, Texas - The LCU offense came alive for 25 combined runs, while the defense locked down UTPB to just three runs across 14 total innings as Lubbock Christian swept the Falcons 16-2 and 9-1 in a doubleheader matchup on Saturday, Feb. 11.

GAME ONE - Lubbock Christian 16, UTPB 2

After going down 2-1 early, the Chaparrals rattled off 15 unanswered runs to knock off UTPB 16-2 for their first win of the series.

Once again, Lubbock Christian (4-2, 4-2 LSC) scored in the first inning, loading the bases with a pair of walks before Jacob Gutierrez brought home Carson Ogilvie to give the Chaps the 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout. Texas Permian Basin (2-4, 2-4 LSC) answered in the bottom of the the second frame, as an Austin Hall RBI single tied the game, with Carson Johnson coming home to score.

The Falcons took their lone lead of the day in the bottom of the third inning, as an RBI bunt single from Michael Clapperton brought in Cooper Ciesielski, and UTPB went ahead 2-1.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, the Chaps came alive, loading the bases before a bases clearing, three RBI double from Ogilvie gave LCU a 4-2 lead. After Eduardo Acosta drew a walk and both he and Ogilvie moved up 90 feet each on a wild pitch, Chris Shull brought the pair home with a two-RBI double, swelling the advantage to 6-2.

The next five Chap batters reached base safely without recording a single hit, as the first two batters were plunked by Jasson Hemmerling, before the next three LCU batters drew walks, with Brevin McCool and Jaxson Edwards earning RBIs each for bases loaded walks, and the Lubbock Christian advantage grew to 8-2. Ogilvie brought in his fourth run of the day, as his RBI single scored Caden Hensley. An error by the Falcons allowed McCool to score, and the Chaps hit double digits, going up 10-2. Shull again blew the game open with a two-RBI triple, with Edwards scoring on another Falcon error, and the Chaps went ahead 13-2. A ground out by Nate Van Maanen brought Shull home, and the inning ended with LCU on top 14-2.

Lubbock Christian added two more runs in the top of the seventh, as back-to-back sac flies from Marcus Steen and Hensley, scoring Shull and Van Maanen, extending the lead to 16-2. The LCU defense, who didn't allow a single hit after the fourth inning, sat down the Falcons quietly in the seventh, as the Chaps took the 16-2 victory in seven innings.

Ogilive and Shull both finished with four RBIs each, with Ogilvie going 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Shull went 3-for-4 with two runs scored along with his runs batted in.

Ciesielski led the Falcons on offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Aydan Alger (1-1) earned his first win as a Chap, going five innings, allowing two runs off eight hits, striking out four batters while walking a pair. Stoney Rhoades closed out the game for the Chaps, facing just seven batters in two innings, and did not allow a hit nor walk any batters.

Parker Goin (0-1) was handed the loss, going 1.2 innings, allowing three runs off two hits, walking one and striking out one batter.

GAME TWO - Lubbock Christian 9, UTPB 1

Andrew Duran pitched a complete game gem, as the Chaps knocked off UTPB 9-1 in seven innings in game two of their doubleheader to complete the Saturday sweep over the Falcons.

For the first time this season, Lubbock Christian (5-2, 5-2 LSC) failed to score a run in the first inning, but after Chris Shull stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error in the top of the second, Jarred Gibson brought home the first run of the game on a sac fly, scoring Shull and giving the Chaps a 1-0 lead. Nate Van Maanen extended the Chaparral lead in the top of the third inning, as his two-RBI double scored Carson Ogilvie and Hayden Blair, pushing the advantage to 3-0. Van Maanen came home to score later in the inning, thanks to a Ryan Ball RBI single, swelling the bulge to 4-0 in favor of the Chaparrals.

UTPB (2-5, 2-5 LSC) answered in the bottom of the third, as a wild pitch from Duran allowed Stephen MacKenzie to come in and score from third, cutting the Chap lead to 4-1. Jacob Gutierrez got the run back for LCU with one swing of the bat in the top of the fourth, blasting his first home run of the season over the left field wall to put LCU on top 5-1.

After loading the bases in the top of the sixth, Eduardo Acosta brought in another run for the Chaps, scoring Gutierrez on an RBI single. Van Maanen drew a bases loaded walk to score Bo Hogeboom, and a sac fly from Shull scored Ogilive, increasing the lead to 8-1.

Hogeboom added some insurance to the Chaparral lead in the top of the seventh, as his sac fly scored Gibson, putting LCU ahead 9-1. The Falcons got a runner to second in the bottom of the seventh, but Duran struck out the last batter he saw, and Lubbock Christian knocked off Texas Permian Basin 9-1 to sweep the doubleheader and take a 2-1 series lead.

Gutierrez was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and recording one RBI off his solo shot. Van Maanen went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored in the victory.

Duran (1-0) pitched a complete game for the Chaps, going all seven innings, allowing just two hits and one run, walking two batters and striking out eight.

Cole Tague (0-1) was handed the loss for UTPB, going 5.1 innings, allowing eight runs, with seven of those being earned, off eleven hits, walking three batters and striking out four.

The Chaps will look to win their third straight game and take the series from the Falcons, playing the final game of their four-game set on Sunday, Feb. 12. First pitch from Roden Field is set for 12:00 PM.
