Long ball leads Chaps to sweep of Cameron

Gibson hit two home runs in game two

LUBBOCK, Texas - A walk-off grand slam from Chris Shull in game one and a pair of dingers from Jarred Gibson helped Lubbock Christian take a series lead and earn a Saturday sweep over Cameron on Feb. 4.

GAME ONE - Lubbock Christian 8, Cameron 6 - Seven Innings

After blowing a three-run lead early a walk-off grand slam by Chris Shull gave LCU their first win of the season, knocking off Cameron 8-6 on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Eduardo Acosta got the offense going for the Chaps (1-1, 1-1 LSC) with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first. Shull knocked a ball to the outfield to bring Acosta home, and got into scoring position himself with a triple. Nate Van Maanen was retired on a groundout in the next at-bat, but brought Shull home to give Lubbock Christian their first lead of the day, going ahead 2-0.

Back-to-back singles by the Aggies (1-1, 1-1 LSC) got two Cameron runners into scoring position in the top of the second, but Marcos Escalera struck out the next two batters to end the threat.

Jaxson Edwards extended the lead for the Chaps with one swing of the bat, as he hit the first home run of the season for any Chaparral with a shot to left field in the bottom of the third, swelling the LCU lead to 3-0.

Cameron saw another chance to score in the top of the third inning, but a double play turned by Acosta and Van Maanen once again turned away the Aggies. The Aggs had another chance to get on the board in the top of the fourth, but Edwards gunned out Drew Durst at third base, and Cameron once again came away with zero runs.

The Aggies finally got on the board in the top of the fifth, after loading the bases thanks to three straight walks. Trent Mallonee brought in Kody Bigford in the next at-bat with an RBI single, and while Jayce Clem did hit into a double play, Hunter Smith was able to sneak in to home and cut the Chap lead to 3-2. Lance Barnett tied the game for the Aggies with a two-out single, scoring Beau Williams and Cameron and LCU headed to the bottom of the fifth all square at three runs apiece.

Acosta again brought the Chaps bats to life with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth, and then found himself in scoring position after stealing second. Van Maanen brought Acosta home with a single of his own, and LCU retook a 4-3 lead after five innings.

Despite a Will Bradley double, LCU had a chance to end the top of the sixth unscathed, but an error by Van Maanen allowed Bradley to score with two outs, and Cameron tied the contest at four runs each.

Barnett once again brought home the runs for the Aggies in the top of the seventh, as his RBI double brought home Clem and Cameron took their first lead of the day, going ahead 5-4. Another error with two outs by the Chaps allowed Barnett to score, and Cameron took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Ryan Ball opened the final frame by drawing a walk, and Brevin McCool reached safely on a single. After a wild pitched moved pinch runners Sam Shank and Jesse Benavidez into scoring position, the Aggies intentionally walked Acosta, and Shull stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Shull knocked the ball clear over the left field fence, and the Chaps secured their first win of the season on a walk-off grand slam, defeating Cameron 8-6.

Shull finished the game 2-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored, his two hits being a triple and a grand slam home run. Acosta went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Barnett led the Aggies on offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Josh Akers (1-0) earned the win for the Chaps, going three innings and giving up four runs, two of those being earned, off five hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Escalera started the game for LCU, going four innings, giving up two runs off four hits, walking five and striking out four batters.

Drew Henderson (0-1) went six innings for the Aggies, allowing eight runs off nine hits, striking out six and walking one.

GAME TWO - Lubbock Christian 10, Cameron 8 - Seven Innings

A pair of home runs by Jarred Gibson, along with a solid outing from the bullpen from Koi Carillo gave Lubbock Christian their second straight win over Cameron on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Eduardo Acosta led off game two the same way he started game one with a leadoff single, coming in to score after an error by Beau Williams to give the Chaps (2-1, 2-1 LSC) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A triple from Nate Van Maanen brought home Gibson, and after a single by McCool, another fielding error by Cameron (1-2, 1-2 LSC) scored Van Maanen, and LCU swelled the lead to 3-0. Bo Hogeboom grounded out to second, but it was enough of a hit to bring home Jacob Gutierrez, and Lubbock Christian ended the opening frame with a 4-0 advantage,

The Aggies loaded the bases in the top of the second, and Williams was hit by a pitch, bringing home Holden Tate and scoring the first run of the day for Cameron. Trent Mallonee drew a walk with the bases still loaded, and Kody Bigford scored, cutting the Chap lead in half to just 4-2. Jayce Clem tied the game with a two-RBI single to center field, and a double from Lance Barnett gave the Aggies their first lead of the game, going up 5-4.

Another Aggie error moved Cade Hensley to second base in the bottom of the second, and a Chris Shull single brought home Hensley to tie the game at five. Van Maanen picked up his second RBI extra base hit of the afternoon, as his two-RBI double scored Acosta and Shull to give the Chaps a 7-5 lead.

Cameron loaded the bases once again in the top of the third, and Williams was once again hit by a pitch, scoring Kai Hershberger, cutting the LCU lead to 7-6. Carson Ogilvie and Caden Hensley turned a double play to end the inning and stay ahead by a run.

Ogilvie doubled to left centerfield in the bottom of the third inning, and after another Cameron error, came around to score to swell the Lubbock Christian bulge to 8-6.

In the bottom of the fourth, Gibson hit an opposite field home run over the right field fence, his first of the season, and the Chaps pushed ahead 9-6.

The defense showed up for Carillo and the Chaparrals, retiring twelve straight batters. After walking Mallonee in the top of the sixth, Bo Hogeboom gunned him out trying to steal second to end the frame.

Gibson added on some more insurance for LCU in the top of the seventh with his second home run of the day, another solo shot, this time over the left field wall to give the Chaps a 10-6 cushion.

Cameron made things interesting in the top of the seventh, as a two-run home run by Barnett cut the Lubbock Christian advantage to 10-8 with nobody out. Carillo got Drew Durst to struck out swinging, but Hershberger got the tying run aboard with a single. Ogilvie, Hensley and Van Maanen teamed up once again on a ground ball by Spencer Simpson, turning the 6-4-3 double play to end the game and preserving the 10-8 victory for Lubbock Christian.

Gibson led the Chaps, going 2-for-4, scoring three runs, and hitting two solo home runs for two RBIs. Van Maanen went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Barnett led the Aggies on offense for the second straight game, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, along with a two-run homer.

Carillo (1-0) earned the win for the Chaps, going 4.2 innings, giving up two runs off two hits, striking out four and walking two. Coleson Abel started the game for the Chaparrals, going 1.2 innings, allowing five runs off one hit, walking three batters and striking out two. Chris Rhoades went 0.2 of an inning in his debut, allowing one unearned run off two hits and walking a pair of batters. Tyler Hardwick faced a pair of batters, walking one.

Nate Creason (0-1) was handed the loss for Cameron, going 2.0 innings, giving up seven runs, four of those being earned, off five hits, walking one and striking out three. Garrett Klein went four innings in relief, giving up three runs, two of those being earned, off four hits and striking out four. The Aggies also committed five errors.

Lubbock Christian will aim for the series victory tomorrow, Feb. 5, in the final game of the weekend. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM. Fans can purchase tickets for the game at lcuchaps.com.
