SAN ANTONIO, Texas – LCU scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back, shutting out St. Mary's in seven innings in game one of their series on Friday, Mar. 10.
The Chaps (14-7, 14-7 LSC) opened the game loading the bases without a single hit, as Carson Ogilivie was hit by a pitch and stole second,
Chris Shull was plunked, and
Eduardo Acosta drew a walk.
Nate Van Maanen scored Ogilvie on an RBI single, before
Brevin McCool wore a pitch to his side, and Lubbock Christian went ahead 2-0.
Ryan Ball drew a bases loaded walk to score another run, and a sac fly from
Jarred Gibson scored Van Maanen, and the lead swelled to 4-0. An RBI single from
Hayden Blair brought home McCool, and before the inning ended, Ogilivie reached on a fielder's choice to score Ball and make it 6-0. Ogilvie also stole second base again, recording two steals in the first inning.
The scoring continued for the Chaps in the top of the second, as Gibson brought home two more runs with a two-RBI double to put LCU on top 8-0. After a single in the top of the third, Ogilvie stole second again, tying the program record set by Brett Kauten on Mar. 19, 2013 against UTPB, stealing his third base of the game. Ogilvie later game around to score on a wild pitch later in the frame, and the Chaparral lead swelled to 9-0.
The Rattlers (8-10, 7-10 LSC) threatened for the first time all night in the bottom of the third inning, drawing two walks, but a ground out ended the frame with the Chaps still on top by nine. An RBI single from Blair in the top of the fourth scored McCool, and LCU went on top 10-0.
Another sac fly for the Chaps added a run to the Lubbock Christian total in the top of the fifth, this time a line out to right field from McCool scoring Shull to make it 11-0 in favor of LCU. Acosta added another run in the top of the sixth for the Chaparrals, as his RBI double scored Ogilvie to swell the bulge to 12-0. The Chap defense retired the final seven St. Mary's batters of the contest, and Lubbock Christian earned their second-straight run-rule victory, knocking off the Rattlers 12-0 in seven innings.
It is the first win for the Chaps in San Antonio since Mar. 1, 2019, a 10-3 win for LCU. Lubbock Christian had lost four straight road meetings to the Rattlers. It is also the second game this season LCU has drawn 10 walks, as the Chaparrals drew 10 walks against UAFS on Feb. 24. Finally, it is also the second straight win via the run rule for the Chaparrals this season, as LCU knocked off Oklahoma Christian 25-8 in seven innings on Sunday, Mar. 5.
Acosta led LCU on offense, going 3-for-3 with one run, one RBI, drawing two walks and two doubles. He has now reached in 35 straight games, the first Chap to do so since
Luis Navarro did so during the 2021 season. The school record for most consecutive games reached safely is 44 by John Harris in 1976, also the most consecutive hit streak in program history.
Ogilvie went 1-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, along with his three stolen bases. Van Maanen went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while McCool went 1-for-2 with two RBI and three runs. Gibson also went 1-for-2 with three RBI.

Brody Ticer (0-1) was handed the loss, allowing five runs off one hit, walking one batter and hitting three. Ticer faced five batters, failing to record an out and threw just 16 pitches.
The Chaps look to clinch the series tomorrow, Mar. 11, as they face the Rattlers in a pair of seven-inning games. First pitch for game one is set for 2:00 PM.
