Sunday Strolls Doom Lady Chaps

LCU Has Highest Walk Total in Seven Seasons

SAN ANGELO, Texas (April 16, 2023) – No.10 Lubbock Christian University walked a season-high nine batters, which allowed Angelo State to top the Lady Chaparrals 8-5. The Lone Star Conference victory at Mayer Field for the Rambelles allowed them to avoid a series sweep to an LCU squad that walked the most batters in a game since April 1, 2016.

LCU Highlights:
Turning Point:
A four-run second inning by ASU helped the Rambelles overcome a 3-0 deficit and it was fueled by four LCU walks.

How it Happened:
LCU jumped out to an early lead, as a leadoff single (to open the game) by Berkeley Quinn developed into a chess match ASU lost. The Belles opted to intentionally walk LCU home run leader Kasey Flores to face Skylar Herrera. The move backfired, as Herrera hit a two-out three-run home run for a 3-0 lead.

ASU did rally back in the bottom of the fourth inning. LCU starting pitcher Ashlinn Hamilton, Ally Talamantes and Kaeleigh Vega each pitched in the second inning and despite one hit allowed in the frame, the Belles scored four runs, as LCU combined for four walks in the inning.

The Lady Chaps tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the third inning, as Amanda Valdiviezo hit a two-out single to left field to score Kasey Flores, who was walked, from second base. The bottom half of the inning had a response from ASU, as their first two batters reached base (single and walk). LCU nearly got out of the jam, but with two outs Tatiana Trotter hit a two-run double. They would eventually post a three-run inning for a 7-4 lead, as LCU eventually put Taylor Franco into the circle.

ASU added to the lead in the sixth inning, as a leadoff three-base error led to an 8-4 ASU lead. LCU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, putting the tying run at the plate with one out. The Lady Chaps did score a run on a wild pitch, but a pair of pinch-hit at-bats were unsuccessful and the Lady Chaps were unable to get the series sweep.

Inside the Numbers:
  • San Angelo native Ally Talamantes was saddled with the loss for LCU and fell to 0-1 on the season. Taylor Franco made her fourth relief outing of the season and pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and did not allow an earned run.
  • Tiarra Delrosario had her team-leading 16th multi-hit game. Delrosario, who has 15 career hits against ASU, was 6-for-12 in the series (.500).
  • Kasey Flores was walked in all four of her at-bats Sunday. She posted an on-base percentage of .643 for the series, as she was walked eight times. The game marked the second time in her LCU career, in which she was walked four times in the same game. Prior to her LCU career, the last player to walk four times in a game was Megan Darling, who walked four times against UT Permain Basin on Feb. 4, 2018.
  • LCU moved to 18-2 when scoring in the first inning, and it marked just the second loss this season when scoring first (30-2 when scoring first).
  • The Lady Chaps also moved to 27-4 when hitting at least one home run in a game.
  • Both teams struggled with the bases loaded, as LCU was 0-for-6 and ASU was 0-for-2 in the series with the bases loaded.
  • Berkeley Quinn was 6-for-7 in the series in reaching base successfully in leadoff at-bats.
  • Skylar Herrera, who led LCU in the series with six RBI, produced her seventh home run of the season and 30th of her LCU career, which moved her into a share of eighth all-time in LCU history with Amanda Parsons (2008-11).

HISTORICAL NOTE
LCU is now 5-10 all-time against ASU and the loss ended a four-game win streak in the series. The Lady Chaps fell to 2-6 all-time in the Concho Valley against ASU.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Chaps return home Friday to face nationally ranked West Texas A&M. The series at Maner Park opens Friday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
