LUBBOCK, Texas (April 2, 2023) – University of Texas of the Permian Basin claimed four singles matches to steal a 4-3 win over Lubbock Christian University Sunday at Penny Gullo Tennis Center in Lone Star Conference dual match play.
LCU's No.1 doubles team of
Michelle Trochez and
Axelle Jacquemin (6-1) and No.2 team of
Anastasiia Khrustaleva and
Anastasiia Opolska (6-3) each claimed convincing wins in their doubles matches to help LCU claim the doubles point for a 1-0 dual lead. "Team Anastasiia" improved to 7-3 on the season with their doubles win, and each team has won two consecutive matches.
Singles play would not go as planned for LCU.
Axelle Jacquemin, playing No.2 doubles, was the first two conclude play and she provided LCU a 2-0 lead in the dual. UTPB responded by winning the following four singles matches to clinch the dual. LCU's No.6 singles competitor, Opolska, won her match in two sets to close the dual. Opolska was trailing 6-5 in the opening-set tiebreaker, but she responded with three consecutive points for the 8-6 tiebreaker to claim the set.
Jacquemin and Opolska each claimed their second consecutive singles victory. Opolska moved to 9-3 in singles in duals and 4-1 in LSC duals play.
The loss moved LCU to 11-8 overall and they are 2-4 in LSC play. They return to play Friday in Dallas, Texas, as they face Dallas Baptist (DBU) in LSC dual match play.
