The Celebration Was Short, But It Was Sweet For LCU Tennis

LCU Claimed First LSC Postseason Win Before Bowing Out of LSC Championships

ARLINGTON, Texas (April 22, 2023) – The Lubbock Christian University women's tennis team had a day full of ups-and-downs Friday at Arlington Tennis Center and the Lone Star Conference Championships. In a continuation of a Quarterfinals match, delayed by Thursday's weather, the No.7-seeded Lady Chaparrals upset No.32 Midwestern State 4-3 for their first LSC postseason win in program history, but they had just a few hours to celebrate, as the match was followed by a 4-0 Semifinals loss to No. 20 St. Mary's to eliminate the Lady Chaps.

vs. MSU
The Lady Chaps faced No.32 Midwestern State in the quarterfinals in a match that was full of dramatics. It all began in doubles play. LCU dropped No.1 singles to trail in doubles 1-0, as LCU's team of Axelle Jacquemin and Michelle Trochez was unable to upset No.33 nationally ranked Amelia Lawson / Sydney Williams. The Lady Chaps bounced back with Anastasiia Khrustaleva and Anastasiia Opolska claiming the No.2-doubles match and Oshini Herath and Emily-Bo Meyer winning the No.3-doubles match to help LCI claim the doubles point for a 1-0 lead in the dual.

In singles competition, it went back-and-forth. Of the first four singles matches completed, LCU had one victory to show, as Michelle Trochez won the No.2-singles match in straight sets. Trailing 3-2 in the dual, and having to win out, Maya Adler tied the dual at 3-3 with a three-set victory in No.5-singles. It put all eyes on a No.3-singles match between Jacquemin and Hannah Yip. Jacquemin won the first set 6-3 but dropped the second set 6-2 to force a third set. The set would end up needing a tie-breaker. Jacquemin survived with a 7-5 tie-breaking victory to win the set 7-6, and LCU clinched a 4-3 dual win for their first LSC postseason win in program history and an advancement to the semifinals.

vs. StMU
LCU's reward was facing the No.20 nationally ranked Rattlers in a match that would be played "to clinch". The Lady Chaps only success would come in doubles. In the No.1-doubles match, Jacquemin / Trochez claimed a 7-5 win, but StMU won the other doubles matches to take the duals point for a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

The Lady Chaps were on pace to win the three unfinished matches, but the first three matches completed were Rattlers victories to clinch the dual 4-0. The loss eliminated the Lady Chaps from the tournament.

In Summary
The Lady Chaps conclude their season with a 14-11 overall record to finish above .500 in their rebirth season. They went 2-4 against nationally ranked programs. Michelle Trochez closed the season with a team-best 15 overall singles wins (15-13), going 14-9 in dual related singles matches. Anastasiia Opolska went 12-6 overall in singles (all duals), leading LCU in LSC play with a 7-2 singles record. Doubles teams of Khrustaleva/Opolska (10-6) and Jacquemin/Trochez (10-10) co-led LCU in doubles victories this season.
