Chaps Head to Canyon for Rivalry on the Range

CANYON, Texas – The Lubbock Christian University men's soccer team will travel to Canyon to renew the "Rivalry on the Range" against West Texas A&M on Wednesday night.
 
Though WTAMU is a Lone Star Conference member the game will be considered a "nonconference" match.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The Chaps defeated regionally ranked Northwest Nazarene 1-0 on Saturday night.
  • Tom Miles made eight saves in the win.
  • Pablo Galietero Diez scored the lone goal for LCU.
CHAPARRAL HEADERS
  • The Chaps are off to a 4-0-1 start to begin the season. LCU's best start since joining the NCAA in 2017.
  • LCU has outscored their opponents 13 to six in 2023.
  • The Chaps are averaging 2.60 goals per game on 15.2 shots.
  • LCU opponents have been held to 1.20 goals per game and only a .097 shot percentage.
  • Eight different Chaps have scored goals this season.
 
I CAN SEE FOR MILES AND MILES
  • Tom Miles has been one of the best goalkeepers in the nation this season, ranking 7th nationally in saves.
  • He is first in the Lone Star Conference in saves and saves per game. He is third in the LSC in save percentage.
  • He recorded his first shutout of the season against Northwest Nazarene after making eight saves, including a save on a NNU penalty kick.
 
SHARING THE WEALTH  
FURTHER BACK
  • The Lubbock Christian men's soccer program began in 2010 with a 3-1 win against the University of the Southwest (N.M.). On Nov. 9, 2021, in the opening round of the LSC Tournament, the Chaps won their 100th match in program history, rolling over UT Permian Basin 6-0.
  • The Chap program enters the 2023 season with an overall record of 108-89-27.

THE SERIES WITH WEST TEXAS A&M
  • The Chaps and Buffalos have been evenly matched over the years. The series has been split 8-8-1.
  • The last meeting ended in a 1-1 draw.
  • LCU is unbeaten in the last four games against WTAMU.
 
SCOUTING THE BUFFALOS
  • WTAMU comes into Wednesday's match with a 2-2-1 record.
  • The Buffalos and Chaps have played quite a few common opponents this season. WTAMU fell to Fort Lewis 2-0, routed Adams State 6-0, and beat Northwest Nazarene 1-0.
  • The Buffalos went 6-4-9 (4-1-4) in 2022 and finished third in the LSC.
  • WTAMU is outscoring their opponents eight to five this season on 1.60 goals per game.
  • They have greatly outshot their opponents 83 to 35 but have a shot percentage of just .096.
  • Gabriel Nevarez is the only Buffalo with multiple goals this season. Scoring two goals on three shots.
  • Keaton Hartman, Dylan Watson, Josh Beeson, D'Jonte Davis, Ben Siri, and Trevor Suggs have all scored one goal each.
  • Asaf Kristal has been the Buffalos starting goalkeeper. He has made seven saves on 35 shots faced. He has a save percentage of .583.
  • WTAMU is coached by Butch Lauffer who is in his 33rd season at the helm. He has recorded over 500 wins in his legendary career.
  • The Buffalos were picked third in the LSC Preseason poll. Bryan Martinez, Chris Palomino, and Asaf Kristal were named players to watch.

A WIN WOULD
  • Give the Chaps their fifth win of the season.
  • Give LCU their 114th win in program history.
