LAWTON, Okla. - The Lubbock Christian men's basketball team went into halftime trailing Cameron 45-36, but exploded offensively hitting 12 second half threes to claim their seventh consecutive win Thursday night.
The Chaparrals (10-3, 5-0) had five players score in double figures, led by Ethan Duncan, who scored a career high 23 points. Aaron Gonzales tacked on 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc, and Ty Caswell chipped in as well with 15 points and two steals.
After shooting 50 percent (15-of-30) from the field in the opening period, The Chap defense held Cameron (8-4, 4-2) to just 10-of-27 (37 percent) shooting in the final 20 minutes. LCU limited the Aggies to four total made three-pointers in the contest.
How It Happened
Both teams traded buckets to start the game as LCU led 7-6 after two minutes of play. Cameron went on to take control of the game, going on a 32-17 run to take a 14-point lead with 4:50 left in the half. The Chaps responded with a 12-7 run to close out the first 20 minutes of play, culminated by a buzzer beating three by Najeeb Muhammad.
The Chaps came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 29-18 run to start the half. A Ethan Duncan three-pointer finished the run and gave the Chaps a 65-63 lead with 8:55 remaining. Cameron reclaimed the lead after a 6-3 run of their own. A Ty Caswell midrange jumper gave the Chaps a 70-69 lead with 5:59 to go. The Chaps never looked back, closing the game on a 19-4 run to start LSC West Division play with a win.
Game Notes
- The Chaps made 12 threes in the second half against Cameron. The last time LCU has made 12 threes in a half was on Feb. 24, 2022 in a 108-54 win over Western New Mexico.
- LCU scored more than 50 points in a half for the third time this season. (56 points in 2nd half vs Oklahoma City on Dec. 31 and 54 points in the 1st half against Northern New Mexico on Nov. 25)
- Every LCU starter scored in double figures.
- The Chap defense forced 16 turnovers, scoring 25 points off Aggie miscues.
- Tiras Morton lead the Chaps in rebounding for the ninth time this season.
- Aaron Gonzales tied his career high in made threes with five.
