Chaps Welcome Sul Ross State in First LSC Meeting

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 16, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University hosts Sul Ross State in the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Lone Star Conference matchup is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at LCU Soccer and Track Complex.

The Chaparrals are in the midst of two game homestand, which saw them draw with UT Tyler 2-2 in their last match. With the result, Lubbock Christian moved to 4-3-4 on the season and 1-1-2 in Lone Star action, sitting at fourth place in the conference. The Chaparrals have a .500 record at home, holding a 1-1-3 record in home tilts.

Sul Ross State comes into the match with a 5-5 overall and 1-2 conference record. The Lobos are currently in their first season in the Lone Star Conference, after making the transition from Division III, and currently occupy tenth place. In their last match, Sul Ross secured its first ever Lone Star win, downing West Texas A&M in Canyon 2-0. The Lobos opened the season with a 4-1 record before dropping four straight matches, with the victory against WTAMU snapping the losing streak.

This marks the first-ever Lone Star Conference matchup between Lubbock Christian University and Sul Ross State. Additionally, it's the inaugural meeting between the two programs overall. Both teams head into the contest with a 0-0 all-time record, each aiming to make history by securing the first victory in their head-to-head series.

Lubbock Christian continues to be led offensively by a solid group of contributors. Justin Martinez and Geoffroy Letienne co-lead the team with three goals, which ranks 15th and 16th in the Lone Star. Nako Amare has recorded two goals and one assist for the Chaparrals, which is good for five points on the season. Manu Nunez has been a spark plug for the potent Chaparral offense, with three assists in the season, ranking tenth in the conference. In front of the net, Connor Pettigrew continues to build his resume as one of the conference's best goalkeepers. Through eleven games, Pettigrew ranks eighth in goals against average, with a 1.636 average. In addition, he sits third in shutouts (4), sixth in saves (48) and second in saves per game (4.36).

The Lobos' offense is led by Carlos Gonzalez, Zachary Trimming and Lewis Coates. Trimming leads the team with three goals off 14 shots. In addition, Gonzalez leads the Lobos in points with six, off of two goals and two assists. Coates has scored two goals and has recorded an assist on the season. Much like the Chaparrals, Sul Ross has one of the best statistical goalkeepers in the Lone Star, Benjamin Aviles. Aviles places sixth in the conference in goals against average, with a 1.513 average. Furthermore, he ranks fourth in shutouts (3), fourth in saves (37) and third in saves per game (4.11).
