The Hilltoppers head into Saturday's match with a 3-3-1 overall record and a 1-0 standing in the Lone Star Conference. St. Edward's dominated then-No. 12 Midwestern State with a 5-0 victory in Austin, Texas. The Mustangs, who are the defending Lone Star Conference champions and were the preseason favorites to repeat, provided the Hilltoppers with a marquee win to kick off their conference play.
St. Edward's and Lubbock Christian are no stranger to squaring off, meeting consistently since 2013. In nine all-time meetings, St. Edward's has the 5-2-2 advantage. LCU gained its first victory since the inaugural match last season, winning 2-0 in Austin. In between those victories, the Hilltoppers had an unbeaten record against the Chaparrals, going on a stretch of 5-0-2 from 2014 to 2019. The Chaparrals are seeking their first win over St. Edward's at home, as they are 0-2 in the two matches played in Lubbock.
Lubbock Christian will rely on its strong offense performance to achieve their first Lone Star victory. They are led by
Saimon Gjeci, who ranks eighth in the conference with eight shots on goal.
Nako Amare is another key contributor, recording six shots, four of which were on goal, and is one of six Chaps co-leading the squad with a goal on the season. Defensively, goalkeeper
Connor Pettigrew has been stellar for the Chaparrals, as his 1.375 goals against average mark ranks sixth in the Lone Star Conference. In addition, he is first in shutouts in the conferences, with four so far this season. Pettigrew also ranks fifth in saves, with a 75.6% save percentage, and first in saves per game, with an average of 4.25 a game.
St. Edward's will also look for strong offensive contributions, especially from Arthur Souza, who ranks within the top five in nearly every offense statistic in the conference. His five goals account for a third of the Hilltoppers' season total and rank him third in the conference. As a team, St. Edward's has netted 15 goals in only seven games.
St. Edward's and Lubbock Christian will have first touch at approximately 5 p.m. from the LCU Soccer and Track Complex. FloSports will carry the game online and it can be viewed at lcuchaps.com/live.
