Chaps Fall on Buzzer Beater in LSC Title Game

FRISCO, Texas - The Lubbock Christian University Men's Basketball team fell in the LSC title game to the Eastern New Mexico 91-88 at Comerica Center Sunday on Lyron Bennett's buzzer-beating 3-pointer as time expired.

The Chaparrals (23-10) had four players score in double figures, led by Ethan Duncan, who had 22 points and two steals. Kurt Wegscheider added 18 points, six rebounds and two steals and Najeeb Muhammad chipped in as well with 14 points and six assists.

Lubbock Christian did a stellar job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 16 assists while turning the ball over six times. Individually, Muhammad was on top of the distribution list for the Chaps with six assists.

How It Happened

After falling behind 22-17, LCU went on a 7-0 run with 9:19 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Aaron Gonzales, to take a 24-22 lead. The Greyhounds answered, outscoring LCU 23-17 the rest of the half. The Chaps went 18-of-37 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. 

Lubbock Christian narrowed its deficit to 58-57 before going on an 8-0 run to seize a 65-58 lead with 7:39 to go in the contest. The Chaps took a 88-82 lead with 48 second to go on a pair of Duncan free throws.

The Greyhounds cut the lead to three when Jahcoree Ealy converted a three-point play with 38 seconds left. ENMU's Greg Johnson stole the ball on the ensuing Chap possession and converted a jumper on the other end to cut the lead to just one. The Chaps turned the ball over on their next possession, leading to a foul. Ealy converted one of his free throw attempts tying the game at 88. The Chaps then went on the attack, Najeeb Muhammad got to the rim but couldn't finish. Mario Whitley grabbed the rebound and kicked it to Lyron Bennett who hit a pull-up three-pointer at the buzzer. 

Game Notes

  • LCU tallied 16 total assists in the game.
  • The Chaps cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 11 offensive boards in the game.
  • LCU got a team-high seven rebounds from Tiras Morton.
  • The Chaps turned the ball over six times in the loss, two of which came in the final 28 seconds of play.
  • The Chaps went 10-of-27 from three in the loss. Five different Chaps hit a three. 
  • LCU was outrebounded 36 to 26.
  • LSC Tournament MVP Jahcoree Ealy lead the way for ENMU with 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.

The Chaps will look to secure an at-large bid to the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.
