Chaps Sqaure Off with St. Edward's in Opening Round of LSC Tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Lubbock Christian University Men's Basketball team travels to Frisco as they battle St. Edward's in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament. This is the fourth consecutive season the Chaps and Hilltoppers have met in the conference tournament.

LCU at the Lone Star Conference Tournament
The Chaps have made the LSC Tournament every season since joining the league in 2019-20. LCU has gone 3-4 in tournament games but have never made the championship round. The Chaps opened last season's tournament with a 71-59 win over St. Edward's, but fell 76-70 in the semi-finals to eventual champion West Texas A&M.
 
The Series
Thursday will be the 21st matchup all-time between LCU and St. Edward's. The Chaps have controlled the series, going 14-6 against the Hilltoppers. SEU beat LCU 91-84 in their lone meeting this season (Feb. 22, 2024). This is the fourth consecutive season the Chaps and Hilltoppers have squared off in the LSC tournament, LCU has prevailed in the last two tournament matchups.
 
About St. Edward's
  • The Hilltoppers are in their 15th season with Head Coach Andre Cook at the helm.
  • SEU comes into Thursday with a 21-10 overall record and are the sixth seed in the LSC tournament after finishing 14-8 in league play.
  • The Hilltoppers are led by Sean Elkinton who averages 17.5 points and 7.6 rebounds a night.
  • SEU scores 79.1 points per game while shooting 44.0 percent from the field and 36.0 percent from behind the arc.
Last Time Out – LCU
LCU shot 52.4 percent from three-point range on the way to a 72-67 victory over #4 West Texas A&M on the road Saturday.

The Chaps had three players score in double figures, led by Ethan Duncan, who had 27 points. Najeeb Muhammad added 15 points and five assists and Kurt Wegscheider helped out with 12 points.

The LCU offense made hay from three-point land, pouring in 11 threes on 21 attempts. Duncan hit six treys for the Chaparrals in the contest.

The Chap defense held West Texas A&M shooters to just 39.1 percent from the field, including 28 percent from three-point range.
 
Last Time Out – SEU
St. Edward's avenged its Tuesday loss to St. Mary's by closing out the regular season in style, scorching the nets on its way to a 94-68 victory over the Rattlers on senior day.

Jaylen Johnston led SEU with 21 points on seven made threes. Sean Elkinton finished with 18 points and seven rebounds; Bennett Mohn scored 18 points on five 3-pointers. Gavino Ramos finished one assist shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine assists, and Blake Nielsen had 11 assists with no turnovers. 
 
St. Edward's assisted on 30 of its 35 made field goals, tying for seventh on the program's all-time single-game record, shooting 18-for-34 from deep. The Hilltoppers close the season with a 21-10 record, including 14-8 in conference play.

A Win Would
  • Give the Chaps a 22-9 overall record and 17-6 in the Lone Star Conference.
  • The Chaps would advance to play the winner of Dallas Baptist and Texas A&M International.
  • Give LCU a LSC tournament opening round win for the third consecutive season.
  • Be the 243rd win of the Coach Duncan era.
