Chaps Clash with Dustdevills in LSC Tournament Semi-Finals Saturday

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Lubbock Christian University Men's Basketball team faces off with Texas A&M-International in the semi-finals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon.

LCU at the Lone Star Conference Tournament
The Chaps have made the LSC Tournament every season since joining the league in 2019-20. LCU has gone 4-4 in their tournament games but have never made the championship round. The Chaps opened this season's tournament with a 80-67 win over St. Edward's, advancing to the semi-finals for the third consecutive season.
 
The Series
Saturday will be the 19th matchup all-time between LCU and TAMIU. The Chaps have controlled the series, going 12-6 against the Dustdevils. LCU beat TAMIU 83-70 in their lone meeting this season (Dec. 10, 2023). This is the first time the Chaps and Dustdevils have squared off in the LSC Tournament.  
 
About Texas A&M-International
  • The Dustdevils are in their 4th season with Head Coach Mac McConnell at the helm.
  • TAMIU comes into Saturday with an 18-11 overall record and are the seventh seed in the LSC tournament after finishing 13-9 in league play.
  • The Dustdevils are led by John Achebe who averages 10.1 points and 6.8 rebounds a night.
  • TAMIU scores 68.6 points per game while shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 28.9 percent from behind the arc.
Last Time Out – LCU
LCU shot 52.9 percent from three-point range on the way to an 80-67 win against St. Edward's at Comerica Center Thursday. The win advanced LCU to the LSC Tournament semi-finals for a third consecutive season. 

The Chaparrals had four players score in double figures, led by Ethan Duncan, who had 23 points. Najeeb Muhammad added 15 points and Kurt Wegscheider helped out with 13 points and eight rebounds.

LCU utilized fantastic ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 16 assists on 31 made field goals. Ty Caswell's five assists were the most for the Chaparrals.
 
 Last Time Out – TAMIU
The #7 Dustdevils (18-11) opened post season play with a 85-75 upset win over #2 Dallas Baptist (24-4) in their first ever LSC Tournament appearance and the second upset over DBU this season.
Late in the second half, the Dustdevils went on a 19-0 run to jump out to a 13 point lead with 5:24 left on the clock. The TAMIU offense put up 49 points in the second half behind 14-24 (58.33%) from the field and 5-9 (55.56%) from beyond the arc.
Esteban Roacho led the charge with a career-high 25 points. John Achebe was close behind with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.

A Win Would
  • Give the Chaps a 23-9 overall record and would be LCU's 17th win over LSC opponents this season.
  • Be the 244th win of the Coach Duncan era.
  • The Chaps would advance to the LSC Tournament Championship game for the first time in program history.
